    Question on 1hp motor

The confusion on the current draw is that many manufacturers use whole numbers to put the amp rating on the plate. Thus a motor that draws 11.4 amps at 110VAC and 5.7 at 220VAC will be labeled 11/6 amps. As said the actual wattage is identical. The other thing is that escapes attention is...

    Forge Build

Typical blown gas PSI is from 1PSI to 5PSI. Average is 2-3PSI. It takes a big burner and forge to use 5PSI, and if the forge is throttled back to 1500F, 1PSI may be all you need. As Karl noted, most folks have no idea how hot they really are running their forges. If you are forging at 1900...

    Question on 1hp motor

Your 1HP motor will run with the same torque at 110VAC or 220VAC. The only difference will be that it will draw half the current per leg. The total wattage will be the same, as will the power. However, running 220VAC is a good idea. It will allow you to hook up a 1.5 or 2HP motor, run a 220V...

    Forge Build

Nathan, I noticed the pressures you are running the burner at. You probably need to turn the regulator down more. If you can get a guage that reads in 1/4PSI steps it will be easier to see the actual pressure at the regulator. Most 0-30PSI standard guages will just sit there at 2PSI regardless...

    Weird Email last night

Just heard back from kelly. The email was from him. He was interested in something that Bigern26 had posted, and wanted to contact him. Poor choice of words, but the request was real. Give him an email Bigern, and he will tell you what he wanted. Stacy

    Weird Email last night

I haven't heard back from Kelly, but I think it was not actually from him. Kelly is 'hellgap' on the BF. Lives up in Moosejaw ,Sask, Canada. He does not send emails like that , and the grammar and spelling are way too good for him. Stacy

    Question on wire inlay

To add: For those who don't know....the "wire" we are talking about is a flat strip about 2-3MM by .5MM ,or in English units, 1/8-3/32 by .020-.030 (22-24 gauge). Round wire is used for engraved metal inlay work on guns and such, flat wire is used on wooden gun stocks and knife handles. Stacy

Disk Grinder - how to true the wheel?

Years back I picked up a 1HP Chinese disk sander for $5. It was new in the box, and had been dropped in shipping. The shaft had evidently bent a tad, and the disk had a slight wobble which caused a huge vibration. The unit was replaced, and the owner was told to throw it in the trash, as return...

    Portable Grinder Stand

I'm with cdent. A miter saw is one thing, a KMG is another. The stability of a portable grinder stand will need to be rock solid, and those tubing portable stands won't cut it. Make a fixed base for the KMG at each location, and use a modified flat bed hand truck from HF to transport it back...

How to make your first knife - tutorial

Here is the rest: This is a good time to talk about adhesives. The best way to assemble a handle is to glue and bolt it together. That way it is never coming loose. This is not always the way it is done, so the glue should be able to do the job by itself. With the exception of bolts, rivets...

How to make your first knife - tutorial

OK, here is part two ( in two installments). It is part of the book I am writing. Post HT finishing Once you receive your blade back from the heat treater it may look dark, spotty, and unattractive. It was shiny and smooth when you sent it off, they must have ruined it! Don’t despair. The...

    Mosaic Pins

Use thin epoxy, like the self leveling type for pouring bar tops. Use epoxy dyes, as the use of model paint can make the epoxy improperly harden sometimes. The tubing can be found at hardware stores, model shops, hobby shops, and online. Like mike said, it is best to go where you can test fit...

    West System Epoxy

West System is good. Another equally good epoxy is System Three. It comes in many formulations and hardener speed combinations, but the most useful for knife assembly is the T-88 structural epoxy. Available through Woodcraft, and many other woodworking places. Stacy

    Grinder set up

I grind sitting often. I also regularly forge sitting on a firm barstool. I either just slightly park my butt on the stool edge ,with my feet on the ground, or fully sit on it and brace my feet on the anvil stand base. Take a close look at my avatar, and you will see that is what I am doing. Stacy
