    Another forge tank question

I've heard talk of using old oxygen and propane tanks for forge's. I also have a big old fire extinguisher 8" dia. and thick walled like an oxy bottle. What's the safe way to make them ready to cut up?

I can understand what Kevin is saying when talking about steels being phased out as better one's are developed for workability and ease of quench. I have been researching steels and it seems to me that for a person just starting out why not begin with W2? From what I can tell it's reasonably...

    Two new guy ?'s

1- I have a lot of old coil and leaf springs. I want to use them to forge decent working knives. Supposedly that sort of thing is usually 5160 but what else could they be made of and what sort of HT temperatures should be used? Or just go to non-magnetic? 2 - I have an idea for a heat...

    Another new guy.

Thanks. I've been cruising all over this forum for the past few days. First thing I need to get straight is heat treating coil/leaf springs. Govment has all my money so I can't afford all the store bought stuff. :)

    Another new guy.

I built my first stock removal knife in 75', did a few from flat files and a couple from big old round saw mill blades. Never anything fancy. I got the bug a year or so ago to hot forge and took a couple of classes from David Lisch. I am very interested in forging blades from whatever metals...
