    sharpening drill bits

Let me start by saying that I have very strong feelings about this issue, I had a 5 minute lesson from a former machinist on how to sharpen drill bits, and it is my strong opinion that if you have any skill at making knives you can certianly sharpen your own drill bits. I sharpen my own bits all...

    Uncle Al's Hydraulic press!

Do yourself a favor and install an oil filter system. I have been running the same pump for 12 years and although I am not running the same cylinder, I'm sure I would be if I hadn't busted it. You also might consider a motor starting switch.

    Cable Damascus

Mike, I make all my steel with a press and I do not have any quality issues. Also this is some of my "cable damascus" which I call serpent. I think it comes very close to the look of cable. Posted by Diamond G Knives "Ive done cable in a can that welded great, just couldnt replicate the...

    scandalous! Heresy!

I have used some recycled steel early on, however my interest from almost the beginning was in damascus steel. One of the most important things in choosing alloys to make effective damascus steel(effective for cutting, strength, ect.) is their compatability. Rather than chasing down all of the...

    How about a mokume forum?

Yes you can line the ring with silver and if you practice silver soldering you can add rail to the sides of the ring and you won't have problems with turning you green. Try copper and nickel silver, it provides a better contrast than brass and copper. Or even better silver and copper with a...

    Warning, Warning, Warning Explosive mixture

Phil, Grinding over a bucket of water is an excellent way to prevent a lot of the problems above, mostly because it eliminates the ignition problem, but marking belts for specific purposes or metals is also a good idea. Thanks,

I have 1lb ferric chloride powder

I have used quite a bit of this in the past few years, and I found that the perfect ratio for mixing is 1lb of powder to 1 gallon of distilled water. You can mix it in the jug the water comes in if you are careful and remove a bit of the water first. Its a bit exothermic and if your not careful...

416 stainless is getting scarce - what 400 or 300 ss will you switch to and why?

Using 410,416,420 on a blanchard can be a disaster, one of the guys I use for grinding stock had a machine down for 4 months, over ten thousand in damage, a piece of 420 got sucked up into the grinder head. Those 3 stainless steels are only mildly magnetic.

    Warning, Warning, Warning Explosive mixture

I have made thermite on purpose and it wasn't the lightly packed stuff on the video above, this is serious stuff and it is very difficult to put out. You just have to let it burn out. The reason is that metallic aluminium isn't very happy being that way, it likes to be an oxide much more. Iron...
