Since i am new to knife making, is there a place that i can get small peices ( 12 in or less) of different steels for fairly cheap, Say, 01, 440,420, and 5160 ? to see which one i prefer for knifemaking?

Does any one have an estimate on the weight and shipping price of a 6 foot X 3 inches wide X .25 thick Billet of 5160? That is the smallest one at mc master carr, and i wanted to know how much to save for shipping.

Thanks, how hot does it need to get to heat treat, i have seen a bonfire do it, so i was assuming i could put it into deep coals untill it got non magnetic and then oil quench it.

I was going to order a 6 foot piece from mc master carr for learning how to make knives from something other than files.
