Fresh take on a simple grinder

Did you notice the block of wood trick. The block has an angle on it. Gives me an idea. A block of aluminum with a handle on the back and a rare earth magnet set into the angled face.

    Why can't I drill a 1/4" hole?

WD40 is a very poor cutting fluid. Its messy but, the best is Moly D.

    Persian Dagger done finally!

Patricee, for what it is the gaps are pretty small and I think your right some of that would go away if you could tighten the retaining screw up. You might change the screw up some and make like an slightly threaded ivory plug that covers it or just doll up the screw head. But, I really...

Grinding Style vs Knife Making Method

I mostly flat grind, however I have messed around with what Ed correctly calls a perverted hollow grind. Only done it on a few smaller hunters and almost all of those where 3/16" D2. D2 isn't going to win no prybar contest in the first place and I tell everyone that. IMHO D2 is about edge...

What's the best way to put a 3/4" hole in a 0.200" thick piece of XHP?

I agree with the 3/8 pilot and the 4 flute end mill. If it is not hardened HSS would be fine. A hole saw would work, but if you have a mill its way better IMHO

    proper cycling for weilded tang

It amazes me the people who will buy into forge welded blades that will reject the idea of having a electrical process weld in the tang area. Some even go so far as to believe that soldered or mechanical connections are better. Thanks for weighing in on this Kevin

    cutting elmax

I cut my pattern from my sample bar with a mounted portaband and used 14 tpi Starret blade no problem. I also drilled 3 1/4" holes for pins and lanyard and 4 1/2" to lighten. No problems regular drill bits and molydee for fluid. Slow turning drills with solid pressure. Stopped 1/2 way through...

    PID question

One thing I want everyone to realize is that you should use the largest wire size(that you can get the length to fit in) possible to achieve you amperage/wattage goal. Say I wanted a oven that ran 15 amps of 220 and therefor 3300 watts/. I could run the 41ft of 16 gauge mentioned above for that...

    PID question

16 gauge .335 ohm per ft. 50 ft = 16.75 ohms for 13 amps of 220V 13x220=2860 watts if you wanted to run a bit more say 15 amps for 3300 watts you could cut your 16 gauge length down to 41 ft The bigger the wire the longer it will run under the same amperage and wattage. 15 gauge wire at...

    PID question

I run 50' of 14 gauge A1 that I coiled myself. It runs just over 20 amps and 4400 watts. The bigger the diammeter wire the longer it will have to be as bigger means less resistance. To figure it out you need resistance per ft and watts you plan to run. 4400 watt devided by 220 Volts = 20 amps...

    Eye opening quench test results.

One of the greatest tools I have gotten for my knife making is an Ames portable RC tester. Small easy to use with a little practice and amazingly accurate once I got the hang of it. I got mine off Ebay for about $150. Make sure it comes with the diamond penetrator. Mine did not, but luckly the...
