Bruce's work in Blade Magazine (again)!

That is because if it was just all easy we all would be making Bruce Bump quality knives :D. And I agree with your are to modest and also humble my friend your work is some of the finest. Now when are you going to build my slippie? Take your time I can pick it up at the OKCA show :P.

    Bird & Trout ?

Dale this second drawing is sweeet I would also draw it with a straight blade or slightly drop point. Here are a couple examples of mine, Both of these are about 1/8" thick with lots of distal taper for that fine work. I would say make what you like just execute it nicely and it will look...

smoky mountain knife works Damascus steec bars

Stu looks like your making some stitching needles for your sheaths. It is a shame they will not replace that steel especially when the flaw is that bad.

    Ringed Gamblers Bowie

Hey Bruce sorry to hear the HT did not do what you wanted. I had the same problem with my first hamon and I did it in a electric oven and let it soak think that was the mistake, I annealed like you and did it in the forge and quenched when the edge was at temp and it turned out great. That was...

    Fisher 1893 Anvil

It is quiet because it is cast iron with a tool steel face, I have a 300 pound Vulcan same construction and they were marketed as the quiet anvil. My Vulcan has great rebound is very quiet. Nice score by the way

Need Help-AISI 5150 Steel for Knives?

LOL I am familiar with the Cali 5150 penal code as I use to live in the south of you in Orange county and had quite a few friends in law enforcement, I miss doing the ride alongs with them. 5150 should make good tough knives just like 5160 does so have fun and get to work :P.

Need Help-AISI 5150 Steel for Knives?

I had some about 10 years ago good steel, it is similar to 5160 which is very easy to find and is very cheap. If I had the choice I would go 5160 for the .10 + carbon, unless you get it free.

    Flatters???

Hmmm Full tang your making it hard on yourself, do you have a sketch. Just curious how you intend to transition where the guard/ bolsters will be? OK Tomorrow I will forge one and take pics for you but it will be like the pic from my website.

    Flatters???

I am trying to figure out what you are attempting from the photo. Is this going to be a hidden or through tang? Or a full tang knife? If what I believe you are trying to forge out is the narrowed down area in front of the guard. If so I do not heat the tip of the blade I heat the tang end and...

    Flatters???

Christopher, On the tang and even the bevels till you can get better with hammer control you can make a guillotine, here is one Ray Richards made and gave to Tai Goo. He named it Godzilla. You can see what can be done with one...

    Flatters???

Christopher, I use flatters quite often and I do not use them as hammers. The way I was taught to use them is they are to be struck with a hammer, I usually use a 6 pound sledge. If you do not have good hammer control ( ie. hammer marks) this will not even out a piece for you, it is manly used...

    Broken Tap Advice?

Using epoxy or JB weld to hold on bolsters is a bad idea, I use these to seal under the bolster on carbon steel and damascus blades. Either peen pins or screws would be your best bet, think I would stay away from mosaic pins unless you used another mechanical attachment.
