How long should my sharp blade last?

Make sure you get the knife into the quench quickly. You probably have less than 2 seconds to go from forge to quench.

    Dumbfounded

So this world expert knife maker has only been full time for 3 months? Sounds fishy to me. A year backlog is easy, just promise one guy you will make a knife then don't make it for a year!

    440C Rusting.... Need help!

Any deviation from a perfectly polished surface is a place where corrosion is likely to occur. You might look into electro-polishing the tools in order to get the most rust resistant finish. ernie

best way to heat a shop?

everyone thanks for the reply. I like the oil type radiator idea but, Cost wise I think I will be limited to wood, wood pellets, coal, oil or propane as a heat source. I can't afford to rewire the shop for electric heat. Anyone ever try one of those hanging propane tube heaters like...

best way to heat a shop?

For someone living here in the North winter is never far away. I need to replace my old oil furnace and I wonder what is the best way to heat my shop? I will be working there most days so I need some cheap method to keep the shop about 60 degrees. I heat the house with wood but I need...

    Your Thoughts?

Maybe the promoter should demo this with a knife first. I can't see subjecting a finely finished knife to that treatment. ernie

    What pin material for slippies?

I have used welding rod in bronze, brass, and steel for pins. Others use solid copper wire for pins both are cheap for first time knives. ernie

    Strongest Epoxy On The Planet

I talked to a top guy at SCS and he said they do have a coating sevice. Their most scratch resistant coating would not hold up on a blade. It would protect the tang from moisture and provide a non stick surface. The vapor would penetrate most handle materials and coat it with a microscopic...

    Strongest Epoxy On The Planet

James, Sorry to carry on but I spent the last 40 years in microelectronics processing and research. So please forgive me if I pontificate. Almost all polymers and even dense plastics do not stop water vapor from migrating through. The rate is very slow but measurable. Even a sealed plastic...

    Strongest Epoxy On The Planet

West systems has been designed for building boats, I use it by the gallon in my sign business. It has not done well in my tests on knives. So I always use Gorilla glue. As for keeping all water vapor out that is an impossible task, for any adhesive. I worked in research where we had to...

    Strongest Epoxy On The Planet

good point boss....bad surface prep will show right away. Sanding works about as good as anything. Be careful in handling finger oils do not help adhesion. Cleaning solutions can cause problems with residues, one example is Windex it leaves a silicone layer on your window so dirt won't...

    Strongest Epoxy On The Planet

the glue wars showed that epoxy does not have great adhesion to metals. The locktite material came in first place and a popular urethane glue was almost as good. I made some w2 kitchen knives and glued on the scales leaving the pins off. After a few weeks of daily use the epoxy released from...

    great water jet service!

I found a company near my house that will do small water jet jobs. After trying to get jobs done by 2 other companies that could not be bothered to even quote on my files I was very happy to find a local company. They cut my parts in 2 weeks! My mind is spinning with all the things I want...

how do YOU explain to someone that a knife is worth a couple hundred dollars

You can buy a reasonable linerlock at Walmart for a dollar. The more expensive ones might cost up to $50. They all cut. To sell a knife for hundreds or thousands you need marketing skills. It does not hurt to have a unique design and a style that is your own. ernie
