    first liner locks

Don, I'm still working with your liner lock book. Slipjoints look more difficult to me and I have this nice damascus to work with. The pattern would be lost with a small blade. Which design sells better? Frank, Thanks for the advise, I'll start making incremntal improvements.

    first liner locks

Thanks Frank, I've been admiring your work. I can make the parts fit together but I really struggle with the artistic design part. I have been advised to develop my own style, that is easier said than done! Ernie

Knife Making and Home Insurance Dilemma

You aren't kidding about agents that know nothing! We have a home based sign business and have a separate policy to cover the business. A few years ago we were changing companies and read the proposed policy. It excluded every thing that could ever go wrong. I couldn't believe they would...

    Brown sugar quench

I have heard of sugar being used for case hardening. As I understand it carbon monoxide migrates into the metal given a enough time at a high temperature and concentration. Ernie

A lot of guys with medical issues lately

I don't have any answers, about healthcare that is a huge problem, just a comment on possibly making a few bucks. People are hungry to learn new skills, many have grown up without ever using tools or building anything. Someone with your skills has a lot to offer. Last year my donation to a...

How many knives for a dealer discount

Jim Schmidt once told me "You can always raise the price of your knives, but you can never lower it". He said you have to consider both the dealers and the secondary market for collectors. He said that new makers have a tendency to price them selves out of the market, then they cut prices...

How hot does metal have to be before it goes "pssst" when ya dunk it in water?

Nerves get progressively damaged by exposure to hot or cold temps. People raised in the arctic can tolerate their hands being in ice water much more than average. Also people that wash dishes in extremely hot water loose sensitivity over a period of years. My mother would claim that her...

Brand new book on building slipjoints

Don, I really enjoyed your DVD set. Lots of great information. Do you cover hidden pins? Some folders have no visible screws or pins, how are they assembled? I asked one guy and he said the screws were on the inside but I don't see how he assembled a knife with a mosaic damascus bolster...

Argon purge for oven, What do you think?

I work in semiconductor processing and we have done experiments with N2 purges in ovens. It doesn't work as well as you would think. Using a quarter inch line with the N2 flowing out at a high rate we were able to drop the O2 level from 20% to 19% in 15 minutes. The oven was all stainless...

I have 1lb ferric chloride powder

ferric chloride is iron oxide and HCl. the hydrochloric acid will evaporate right through a plastic container. I had a Tupperware container go dry over a 10 yr period. all I had to do was add muriatic acid and wait a couple days for all that rust to redissolve and my ferric chloride is like...

I am an old dog, but I learned a new trick.

I gave up on weed eaters and bought a unit with big wheels 3hp and tie on strings that are .155" The string never breaks unless you are trying to cut steel posts and then all you do is loop on another pair of strings. Now weed whacking is fun because I can knock down 5' high grass and never...
