    2"x72" Belt Grinder

Got a bit more done this weekend. Picked up the bearings locally at Grainger. Bearings are 25mm ID and 50mm OD. Made a housing from a 3" x 3" round of steel, bearings were pressed in on each side. Made a spindle to press into the bearings. Everything is press fit together with .0004"...

    2"x72" Belt Grinder

Wayne, I had considered direct drive for the reasons you stated, but I have several choices for motors and wanted the flexibility. I have a 4000 rpm, DC variable speed tread mill motor as well. I will make the drive wheels. The only wheel I will buy will be the contact wheel, only because of the...

    Poor Man's surface grinder

Just a word of caution guy's, when you grind on your mill be very careful of protecting the ways from the grit and dust. This fine dust will prematurely "grind" the precision surfaces that mate together. Not good for the machine. It can be done if you cover the ways with rags. Lots of cautions...

    2"x72" Belt Grinder

This is the beginning "frame" of a scratch built 2"x72" belt grinder. The 1/2" plate steel, as well as the 1" shaft material came from the scrap yard for .40 a pound. All the material was rusty, Evaporust worked well to clean it up. Have had the bearings for over 20 years, they are from a...

    Massachusetts Cabinetmaker

Hello All, I am finding some interesting and fine work on this site. Clearly much to learn about how to "properly" make a knife. My experience is as a custom furniture maker (over 35 years), so I have spent pretty much my whole life, in the shop. My woodworking shop is in my barn behind the...

    wood for cutting board

Maple would be my wood of choice, fine, tight grain. Walnut and cherry can be found with the same tight grain. Trick is to be sure that the wood is well seasoned, and that different wood species have the same type grain structure so they don't absorb moisture at different rates. I always wash...

Why no one knows what a custom knife maker is...

Hello Gentlemen, this is my first post on knifedogs. Enjoying looking around and seeing some very fine work. This thread caught my eye, because I have been making high end custom furniture for more than 35 years. I get the same looks. A couple years ago I set up at the Architectural Digest Home...
