Agreed, The small piece is walrus. If you look at the cut end you notice the almost transparent core. Thats walrus. This looks like what would be called anciant ivory, over 100 years old. My guess just by the coloring.

I've never been able to get a decent hamon on 0-1. 1095 and w2 are where the hamons live (also 1075 and 1080, 1084)

Here is a blade I did for a demo.

I etch the blade. Install the handles and finish the knife. Then go back with a small brush and etch any places that got sanded while finishing. I etch with the FC clean the FC off with 0000 steel wool soaked in white vinager. Then clean with Windex and polish with Flitz metal polish.
