I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

I just finished watching. Interesting. Myself,,, I think they are a little anal. I agree, there is a difference between wootz and the steel we use now. It was interesting that they did not give the Japanese any credit for there wootz. I'll just leave it at that. So you are going to make fake...

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

Just wondering, What video did you watch that refers to our blades as fake damascus. Myself,,, I was not offended at all. It is my understanding that some laser etch a damascus pattern on a blade. That is what came to mind when you called it fake damascus.

I've got a "how thick" problem with my forge build.

Being that I made my own forge I would have to say 4.25" is a tad on the small side. To each there own. That would be like me making fun of someone else's motorcycle. The 4.25" is only .25 over the opening on my forge. You have had a lot of good advice. What you do with it is up to you...

    Here ya go Kevin

I like low layer damascus myself Chris. With only one other "W" billet under my belt I can't tell you what a good fold count is. I have no idea. It's cut for one more fold. Then I will slice it up. Myself,,, I think when I stretch it out it very well might be a lower layer count.

Maybe,,,, I've lost more then I would like too. I would have to make another billet if I wanted to make a Bowie.

Mine too. BUT,,,,, if I don't have a little more when I stretch it out it will be a low layer blade.

I'm sorry to say that my work is cut out for me. Also,,,, I'm losing a lot of material in the forge. By the time I get to where I want to be I might not be able to make a letter opener. I'm thinking I might have to make another billet. Time will tell. Wish I had a press!!!

This was my first attempt at a "W" pattern. It was a low layer count. It turned out well but as usual I want more.
