    Tapering a tang...

How do I get started in doing this??? My common sense tells me that the taper must travel the entire distance that my scales would cover or else they'll rock front to rear. But then how do I get a clean "cut off" at the ricasso??? Most of the blades I work with are 1/8" and rarely over 6" in...

    Sometimes ignorance is bliss....

Last week I decided that I had to make a couple of sheaths out of self defense. I normally refer my leather work to a much better leather worker than I will ever be. Anyway I decided I needed a piece of granite to work this leather on so I stopped by a granite countertop/headstone place and...

    Built my own carbidizer

Ed, when you say "Dremel vibratory etcher" are you referring to the engraving tool they make?? That's my guess but want to make sure..

A first (and possibly last) attempt at a riunded spine....

Ed sent me some helpful tips but I'll let him share them. What I did was totally backwards and I tried to "shoeshine" the rounding and that's why it took so long. Oh well, live and learn and I've definitely learned some tricks to make this a little easier.. Thanks guys!!

A first (and possibly last) attempt at a riunded spine....

Working on a little knife 6.25" in length with a 2.75" blade. The type you would choke up on to do something with the first part of the blade. I thought a rounded spine might be more comfortable as well as add a distinctive look to the piece. What I discovered is that doing a rounded spine...

    Hummingbird Disaster

I constantly have to monitor my wife and her H'bird feeders or she will leave them out until way to late into the fall. She doesn't believe me when I tell her they migrate and unless they start on time they will die before reaching their destination. I've had a couple get into my shop (9 foot...

    Atlas Mini Etcher...

Just got stencils from Patricia at IMG and get okay results with my current set up but looking for something a little better. Saw the Atlas unit but can't find any real world experience. Does anyone have one and if so how do you like it??

Help on a couple of issues....

I just got my grinder so I'm experimenting with different belts but I see what you guys mean. As for the pins, I'm guilty, been clamping in a small vise and cutting with a jewelers saw. I guess we learn along the way, sometimes the hard way!!! Thanks for all the responses and knowledge...

Help on a couple of issues....

"Belt slap"... what is causing my belts to bump on the platen when the seam comes across??? If I put the least amount of pressure on the belt while using the platen I get a bump when the seam comes around.... Obviously not good... Screwed up pins.... I check my pin stock with my fingers when it...

    sanding in tight corners/curves

I used to use a Dremel with the sanding drums but it leaves something to be desired. I recently purchased an oscillating drum sander and now get much better results. But in some curves the Dremel is the only answer.....

    Peeling knife

I can't tell from the pictures (you may have already done it) but the biggest thing I have done with small paring type knives is to either round the top spine (forward of the handle) or significantly break that edge. When peeling people invariably "choke up" and have their finger joint on the...

    Checkering a Knife Handle

Try a bunch of different woods, the worst that can happen is dull cutters which are easily replaceable. I got my first set of checkering tools when I was about 20 (66 now) and I swear that were made harder back then. The new ones don't seem to have the longevity of the older ones.

Showed up out of the blue.....

I realize that, maybe I'm just attempting to justify (or deny) what I'm doing. But I know in my heart I can quit any time I want, I really can...... just don't want to right now....
