    7th completed knife, 1/4" 5160

    The thicker steel looks and feels better if the tang is tapered. Your friend should be able to help you with that. It is not really that hard if you have the right tools. There is little tricks to every thing. It does look really good. Hope to join all of the others with mine soon.

    How big should Hawk handles be?

    I have some extra wood that is too big for the stuff I do. I was woundering how big hawk handle need to be. I have some red walnut that is about 1 1/2" and some maple that is 1 1/8". If any body is interested I will get pics of what I have. Thanks. James Clair, Archer Moon.

    Proper way to anneal...

    Be very carfull with the old truck springs. They do have stress cracks in them that do not show up until you go to polish them.

    Feels like home.

    One of my shop visits to Andy Franko had fresh roasted rolls on the edge of his forge. Learned a lot from him in about two hours. Need to go back. And the coffee was good too. Thanks Andy!

    Recommended files?

    As to the file guide, look for an old copper flaring tool. Pawn shops and yard sales will be your best friend. The flaring tool is hard enough to withstand the files and is cheap. I found mine in a junk pile in a pawn shop for $1. Have not done a lot with the files. Have a small wood sander...
