Basics of heat treating; building our toolbox.

Your posts are always worth reading, Kevin. You do a great job of breaking the chemistry and mechanics of steel down so that they can be understood in spite of the big words that make some of us want to reach for the bottle of Excedrin Migraine...The visual aids are really helpful in this regard.

The new guy has a question

If not done properly the welding process will introduce slag inclusions and areas that don't weld, so the damascus is much more subject to error during production of the material itself. Aside from that, the question depends more on the specific alloys involved than anything else.

    Damaged anvil...

I'm no expert but I would pass on that one. The only option to repair something like that is to weld, and welds tend to come apart on anvils in my experience. The edges look pretty badly used all the way around, even without the missing corner I would probably pass unless it was really cheap and...

    Shapes of handles?

Theres nothing like getting a scrap or 2 of cheap wood and experimenting until you hit on something. Bad ideas are easier to swallow if they don't ruin a piece that you already have a lot of time sunk into, or a nice set of scales at any rate.

    Cru Forge V

It's worth a try if you haven't already. My take is that it offers better wear resistance than just about any other "forgeable" steel currently availible. It is noticeably harder to finish post-HT than 0-1 or any other steel I have forged, hand sanding it is a little like working with 3v due to...

That is some nice looking damascus! I really like the shape of the guard too, it adds a nice bit of detail.

    Cru Forge V

Think of it as 52100 with a bit of vanadium. It performs well, and also rusts very easy.

    Hinterland 7" Field/Combat

This is the mother of my field/tactical designs and the first one of this model to be availible in cpm3v. It features a stonewashed finish, which will be replacing the bead blasted option I have been offering as a non-reflective blade finish. Other features include a tapered tang, thumb ramp...
