    Updates - Hometown Hero Build

I have been silent but am keeping an eye on this. I know it's probably hard to toss numbers out at this point but if you can ballpark how many names/recipients I should be looking for at the recruiter's office, that would help. I have dropped in once just to establish contact and plant the idea...

    "Odd How To" Question?

I was guilty of assuming that same thing, until one day I decided to check mine:(

    "Odd How To" Question?

You can smooth then down a bit with good-quality coarse sandpaper wrapped around a flat block, if the edges aren't too badly beat up. That might get 1 or 2 of them good enough to use, but it uses the abrasive up fast so you will go through a lot of sandpaper. You might check them with a...

Hometown Hero Build - Makers Recruiting Drive

Thanks to the Poolee for piping up on here, it means a lot to me to hear a few words of thanks for our efforts. You guys are the best of our nation, and if we must send you off to fight for us then we damn well owe it to you to see that you are as well equipped as we can make you. Just paying...

I am grateful for your work on the last build, Dave. You earned my business at any rate, I will probably be in touch soon.

    Flash tempering

What I was trying to say is that a 1095 blade that is taken to critical and quenched immediately in used motor oil (without a soak at temp) will have a microstructure that is partly pearlite and partly martensite. This microstructure might very well achieve a useable level of hardness/toughness...

    Flash tempering

Flash tempering probably combines better with a partial bainite or pearlite microstructure. My guess is that the closer you get to 100% martensite structure, the more important the full time/temperature effect is for proper tempering. Remember that not all austenizing/quenching procedures give...

    Updates - Hometown Hero Build

I want to holler a thanks at Aldo and Tracy for gettin' involved (again)...Do we have Dave at GLWJ to thank also? Who is cutting the blanks? And let's not forget Bill, who did so much behind the scenes on the last build. You guys should be proud.

    Happy Veteran's Day

I was politely reminded by a veteran once, after wishing him a happy Veteran's Day, that it is not a joyous holiday, especially for those who remember lost friends and loved ones. It's not a cake and ice cream kind of holiday for those it is meant to recognize, and it is easy for those of us who...

You guys that make knives full time..What did you do in a previous profession?

I was/am a carpenter by trade. Might be again one day:) Knifemaking is a month to month profession for me, I can never take for granted that it will cover my bills in any given month and I do end up looking for side work here and there to fill in.

    HT Companies

I have an oven and I still use Peter's, for all of my 3v blades at least. The batch load can be a hurdle if you want to get the lowest cost per blade, but if you can send 10 or so blades at a time (of a given steel type) it works out.

    question for a beginner?

Peening involves some risk of over-expanding the end of the pin and causing the handle material to crack or split open. Most guys just epoxy the pins with handle materials that are prone to cracking. If you do want to peen them I suggest taking some practice on scraps first. Knowing how to...

    Knife bending question

+1, the technique is generally known as "fixture tempering". I use a piece of flat stock as thick or a little thicker than the blade, usually bent just a hair to put a tiny counter-bend on the blade when it is clamped. I always do this after at least one complete temper cycle, bending it after...

Re-creation from the Wallace Collection- 16th century dagger

Thank you! I don't really want to recall how much time is in the guard, it was mostly forged to shape but that was a couple of yeas ago. The fluting is more recent and took a few hours all by itself.
