    My first knife

No maker's mark yet. I'm busy refining the design, and then I might buy myself an etcher for Christmas... Oh, and I'm not planning on giving this one away (or selling it).

    My first knife

Thanks guys! It really was a learning process, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I don't think I'll ever do one completely by hand again! John, numbers 2 through 5 are already at the heat treaters...

    My first knife

HI everyone, I just completed my first knife!!! The blade is O1 tool steel, 9" OAL, and the blade is 4 1/2" long, heat treated by Peter's Heat Treating. The scales are Brazilian Walnut, and I made the mosaics myself (not perfect - my first try as well). The sheath is made from 9 oz leather...

    WIP - my first knife

Finally Done! So I managed to put in quite a bit of work since my last post, and I made the sheath last night (9 oz leather, hand stitched with 45 degree ambidextrous belt loops, and stained antique brown). Here are some pics (I'll also post in the the Knife Pics area). Overall, I very happy...

    WIP - my first knife

I got the blade back from Peter's Heat Treating on Monday, and managed to spend a bit of time on it. Here is what it looked like when I got it back: Cleaned up to 400 Grit on the grinder, and then back to 320 by hand: Then up to 400, 600, 1000, 1200, 1500, and finally 2000 (and a little bit...

Sanding Belts -- villiage idiot questions.

I'd be very interested in the results of your questions as well. I recently bought the same grinder, and bought a bunch of belts from e-bay, but they're not the best quality...

    My 3rd Knife

Very cool! I like the warthogs in the blade. Where did you get the drilling clamp? I really like the way you can level the blade out so that it sits perpendicular to the drill bit.

stupid question #........oh hell i forget

I spoke to Brad Stallsmith of Peter's Heat Treating about this the other day, and he said that he does the Cryo freeze as a standard part of his heat treating process, because it significantly enhances the edge retention of the blade. He specify how much (differs by blade, I suppose), but he did...

    WIP - my first knife

Thanks again for the great info, Doug. The platen is removable on the Craftsman - I took it off yesterday to attach the new glass platen to it. I also feel like heat treating is one of the very key components of knife making, so I'll probably save up for an oven before I buy a new grinder...

WIP -- 1st knife from scratch

Wow, great find! It looks like an older version of the new 2" x 42" grinder that I just bought. The belt dimensions might actually be on the back of the belt.

    WIP - my first knife

Thanks for the compliment, seionage. Yeah - its A LOT of work to do this by hand. I couldn't believe how much quicker it is even on the crappy Craftsman grinder...

    WIP - my first knife

Thanks for the great info, Doug. I did manage to get some belts from e-bay that seem to work pretty well so far, although I haven't cut stainless with it yet, which might force me to learn splicing, etc. I would definitely want to invest in a better grinder after I get the hang of it a bit more...
