    Epoxy question

No kidding. Mike Tyson said that everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. That is how it goes with me and five minute epoxy, lol. Acra-glass cannot be beat, period.

    Stuborn Micarta

You can resolve this issue without the purchase of additional equipment, at least in the immediate future. As Bladegrinder said on the previous page, take a piece of heavy glass, or granite, or even any polished FLAT surface and lay a piece of 220 grit sandpaper on it. Take your scales and hand...

    Stuborn Micarta

I suppose if you can source one at a good price it would be a great asset to have, however as illustrated in this case, getting things flat is not necessarily the only determining factor in final fit and finish. I would simply hate to see someone lay out such a considerable sum of money for a...

    Stuborn Micarta

Carlton, it seems to me that some of your difficulties may be due to the positioning of your screws. I suspect the middle screw when tightened is forcing the front of your scale assembly to bend upward. I would not spend any money on either a surface grinder or precision ground stock at this time.

    Utility/Small Game

Here is a simple little small game knife I finished up this morning, based off of a previous design with minor improvements. Your observations and comments are welcome. Thanks for looking. 1084 stock removal method 8" OAL with a generous 3 1/2" cutting edge Maple Burl handle Red G-10 spacer...

    Stainless bolster on carbon steel

No metallurgical issues I can think of. Lots of potential fit and finish issues though, lol. I'm sure there's a WIP or Tutorial on the process around here somewhere.

    What belts?

I use 50, 120, 400 and then go to hand sanding. Which brand seems to be a personal choice based on experience, grinding technique, and price point. True Grit has been a great resource for many.

    Koa Bird and Trout

Thanks guys. It was definitely a challenging project. I think I will scale it down a bit, implement a few refinements and make this model one of my regular offerings.

    Koa Bird and Trout

I was going to call this a gentlemen's bird and trout but considering the amount of swearing that was involved in it's creation I thought better of it. Your observations and criticisms are welcome. 1084 differentially hardened blade 9 1/8 OAL 4 1/2 blade with 4 1/8 sharpened edge File-work on...

    Suggestions for a mini-mill

In order to meet the needs of my budget, shop space, and portability I chose the LMS mini-mill linked above. These guys seem to be very knowledgeable when it comes to their products and I am confident they will help me with any issues that may arise. If I outgrow it that means business is good...

    Suggestions for a mini-mill

So did anyone get their mill purchased yet? I am still on the fence myself over this https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=4981&category=1387807683 or this http://www.grizzly.com/products/Drill-Mill-with-Stand/G0704. I can't decide, but i will say I am sick and tired...

    400 Grit Belt

Darrin, based on your experience, do you think it would be possible to go straight to 400 grit hand sanding after the Norton U936 in 320 or would it be better to run the 600 belt as well before hand sanding?

    400 Grit Belt

Thanks guys. I've been using the Hermes however they seem to load up very fast when used wet, but they will do one knife easily enough which I suppose is not really too costly. I may need to lower my expectations, lol. I have, and frequently use the Trizact belts however they do fall apart when...

    400 Grit Belt

I can't seem to find a good 400 grit 2x72 belt for finish grinding (wet after HT) on the KMG. I really like and use the VSM ceramic belts for 50 and 120 but they do not make a 400. Any recommendations?

    What metal for guard?

I believe the original fittings were aluminum, so you might go with that if you are trying to stay as original as possible. I've never used the prefabricated guards so can't offer up any advise there other than since this is your first one, buy 6 or 12 inches of whatever material you wish to use...

    Etching problems

I Agree with Fred, 5 minutes is way too long. I use the commercial etchant and three to five second swipes, and only about five of those for a max total of 25 seconds or so.
