Here I go on to the big world of kitchen blades.

Sounds like a lot of great advice here and I know as a new maker myself that I've made the same mistakes as you have multiple times. Now you just need to make the knife and post it on here as we're all interested in seeing the finished product.

    Wip

This piece has a nice classic look and for your first piece it looks like it's coming along well. It is a great all around EDC style. If anything, I'd just suggest to smooth out the curves in the profile to have a clean radius for each section. The forefinger grip section is nice. I have a...

Simply amazing. I've sat here and stared at every minute detail trying to fathom the time and planning that has gone into this. It is not only a beautiful piece of work but the precision to mix so many different aspects of media is mindblowing. Thank you for sharing.

    Damascus - Etch Help

Thanks for the input guys. I'll do my best as this is the my first attempt at any form of Damascus. I guess the real beauty in this piece will need to be in the handle and sheath.

    Damascus - Etch Help

Thanks for the input John. I'm not sure there's actually any nickel layers in this steel. I'll definitely go with your recommendations on how to finish the sanding on it with that light touch.

    Damascus - Etch Help

Hey Guys, I'm working on this new piece that is some steel I got from a guy in trade for services. The steel is a "Damascus" from Pakistan that he got somewhere but I have no clue what the actual steel is. This piece actually had a really ugly forge weld that didn't weld right in a hollow...

    New Bowie

Thanks for the input Wayne. Your piece here inspired me to try out my own piece and loved the finish. I do believe it is some sort of polyester resin as well and it worked well but heated up really quick and started to get soft. I wasn't able to put it on my buffing wheel so I ended up hand...

    New Guy from Central Kentucky

Welcome to KD. You'll find that knifemaking turns from a thought to a hobby to a passion. There's a lot of great people here with great info. Your first knife is something to be proud of, no matter what you think of it. Keep it and you can always look back and remember all the hard work...

    Handle Attachment with Filing

I've done both methods and like Mr. Janik said, filling the filework with a color helps to make your hard work pop nicely with a black. I've also done a fill that used shavings of the antler itself to color the epoxy to match the coloring. I used a grout bit on a Dremel to grind out excess...

Love the blade design, that's really nice. I've got some of that same handle material that was given to me a while back.... Never thought it could look like that.

    Low layer twist and stag

That's an awesome looking knife. I love how you don't have a ton of layers in the steel.

    Wootz steel from India

I was given some Damascus steel in trade for services that was marked as made in India and some from Pakistan and all of them had poor forge weld joints that separated. I had to work around those section which was unfortunate.

    Tru Oil vs. Ca

There's a few good videos on Youtube regarding a good application of Tru-Oil. I've used it with only a few coats and have done testing all the way up to 12 coats and it does come out with a beautiful finish. Essentially, I'd recommend doing it in warmer weather at least 70deg or more. The...

    Post etching residue - HELP!

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the detailed input Mr. Caffrey. I've noticed that the O1 will rust quite fast when grinding and dunking to cool. I'll make sure I just soak it in a neutralizing bath for a while after etching.

    Post etching residue - HELP!

I'm reaching out to those far more experienced than I with this. I have a neck knife that I make out of O1 that goes into a kydex sheath (wrapped in leather). The issue is I had one come back with an odd residue that is almost growing around the etching of my maker's mark. I'm not sure if I...

    A Chopper hardcore survival knife

So, I don't normally read all the comments on each posting but I had to with this one. I was cracking up with some of the stories that you all have thrown out there and know that I'll eventually end up with a few myself. To date I've been pretty lucky overall. The point of "Right tool for the...
