    Brut de Forge Challenge

That was my thinking also, but I don't like being one who pushes my ideas on others, so I'll try not to fuss. Why don't we go ahead and turn this into a KITH?

    Swage - it?

A swage is also a blacksmith's tool... from wikipedia: I've wondered if the reason a false-edge is sometimes called a swage might have something to do with the way they were once made....

    Swage - it?

I file mine in before hardening, just to be different I suppose...:)

Handle problems, well, a different handle...

Heh, I have the same problem, the handle keeps giving out, usually right in the middle of a critical weld. My 'fix' is to re-weld the handle on after every fold (actually in my case cut and stack), whether it needs it or not...:) Lately when making pattern-welds my theory is to anticipate the...

    Perplexed!!!! Flaw??

I've run into this once or twice, it always seems to follow how the blade was sanded before hardening. I think Travis may well be right, or at least it is the best theory I've heard yet...:) Glad you got it fixed.

    20 Pound propane tank

Sorry I gave you the wrong link, perhaps you can find it from there if it used to be on his website. Yes, that's the one I was talking about at Batson's, worked like a charm... I'm planning to build one just a bit longer, for some crazy reason I want to make swords... And yes, if you're...

    20 Pound propane tank

This should take you to it... At Batson's symposium this year they had a very impressive heat-treating forge, made from a garbage can of all things... lined with kaowool. Basically the same design with a single burner and a pyrometer, it held temperature perfectly once fine tuned.

Talk to me about knife handles

Yep, what they said. Also, if at all possible, try to handle as many knives as possible. If there is a hammer-in or knife show near you it is a great opportunity for this. Examine the handle for how it feels in the hand, not just in the standard grip but in several different grips, take note...

    Batsons Bladesmithing Symposium???

    Batsons Bladesmithing Symposium???

I was really wanting to go but it doesn't look like I'll make it this year. As far as I know it is still on for this weekend, I talked with two people today who are going... this is the first I've heard of the flood damage, I hope the main bridge is still intact.

OK you guys - Just finished my first knife!

That is pretty cool, though I doubt the MDF will hold an edge very long...:) The handle looks a bit 'fat' to me...
