"depending on the application of the blade"

KenK, I only referred to 1084 as a "beginners" tool steel because that's the term I've heard. I understand that reference is based on how easy it is to HT using a magnet as temperature guide. At this point, I'm forced to HT with a torch. That's not a big problem because the blades I'm...

"depending on the application of the blade"

Thanks, Chris, I'll check out both of those titles. I've been in touch with Walter Sorrells and sent him an e-mail earlier this afternoon. Will see what he suggests.

"depending on the application of the blade"

Thanks, guys. Just got home from work. (my wood carving class at the Vo-Tech) I sold 4 of the 6 carving knives I made. All of the people who bought them are experienced carvers and will be back for the Fall class. I'll ask for feedback, as they all know what to look for in a good carving...

"depending on the application of the blade"

Thanks for that comment. I can control my tempering temps to + or - 1 degree because my oven is run by a PID. However my heating temps (I heat with a hand-held torch) are dependent on a magnet! Wish I had a propane forge operated by a PID.

"depending on the application of the blade"

Thank you, Ken, that will help all this stuff make better sense to my feeble brain. So if I were using 1084 to make a carving knife.............where edge holding is important, I'd want to temper at the lowest temperature, correct?

"depending on the application of the blade"

Okay, I realize my question was pretty broad. Let's say I'm making a camp chopper (since you brought it up) and I want a tool that will hold an edge under that kind of abuse. Lets say I'm using 1084. (beginners steel..........and I'm a beginner) :D The data here on the site says: Heat Treat...

"depending on the application of the blade"

I don't understand this statement...........depending on the application of the blade, when it comes to tempering. Is there a chart that shows application and how to alter for that application?

    Big "Howdy" from Oklahoma.

Thanks, Anthony. I joined the Saltfork Craftsman organization and am paid up for a basic knife making class at the end of June. It's in a fellows shop about 10 miles South of my house. I haven't met anyone yet, but there seems to be a fair number of people in the area making/forging knives...

admin_dog, I was just looking at my personal data and realized my birth month is incorrect. There was a note there that said an administrator would have to change it . My correct birth date is June 23, 1945. Sorry for the bother. Don't know how I screwed it up.

    Big "Howdy" from Oklahoma.

Actually, C Craft, I haven't. I've got several I use almost daily. Nothing to brag about in appearance........................but they cut............indeed, they cut. Something about a RWG (Bob Gentry) knife that sucks the wind out of you when you carve with it. They are the favorite of any...

Thanks for the welcome, Dennis. It would be nice if all these forums would have "State Lists" of members so people might connect in person more easily.

I've been "lurking" on the site for the past 10 days or so. Been reading posts like a mad man. Think I've looked at every knife on the Custom Knife forum and the Pictures forum. o_O Learning all about forges, metals, tools, etc. Boy, is there a ton of info on this site.............and seems...

Just need to vent a little

C Craft, This is my first post on the forum (as I yet don't know enough about the craft of blade-smithing to comment) but your "rant" seemed an appropriate place to start. My late wife died 18 years ago yesterday from Pancreatic Cancer. When she first started showing symptoms, a Doctor was...
