    the veg oil was at 120*F... I had my earlier knives tested, and they were a bit high in the mid to upper 60s rc.. i have since changed from a charcoal forge to a kiln to get better temp control. also i do 1 blade at a time. so i can keep track of time in the heat better. Aaron

    Thanks Doug.. i'll give you more info on my HT process. i pre soaked the blades at 1200* for about 10 minutes, adjusted the temp to 1480* and soaked the blades for 10 minutes and quenched in warmed up vegetable oil.     My kiln is 110V. i will power it up and wait till it hits 1500* before I put the O1 in. then i'll let it soak for 20 to 30 minutes total.... that sound good?

    robert, the unit i have is probably from the 50's and the oven inside is about 16x16x16. it is huge, and weight is about 100 lbs. i just thought because of the thermal mass it took that long to heat up???

    I put a digital controller on my kiln and it takes 3 hours to hit 1500* if I put my blades in and let the heat ramp up to 1500* will that be okay. I will let them soak at 1500* for a while before quenching.so they can potentially be in the kiln for 3.5 or more hours..

    thanks for the comments guys, I am waiting for a chance to skin and elk with it.. My buddy has a late season cow tag in Wyoming, I am going with, in hopes to try out the knife... I made one just like it for him as well, so either way it will get tested.
