    Shapes of handles?

I like to look at and handle different knives to get an idea what works for me. See what things you like and dislike on some different type knives. Once I get an idea, i sketch it out on paper and make a cardboard mock up of the knife. The mock up give you something to hold in your hand and...

    Praise and Prayer

I've been out of work for over a year. God has been good to us, always providing for us in one way or another. It has been very humbling to have to ask for help and receiving things from unexpected sources. Prayer request: After many months of not getting much response in my quest for a...

    How To Finish Micarta/G-10

DonL, How did you get the fuzzy finish on the Micarta. I accidentally did it on a paring knife but can't remember how I did it. I like it when my hands are wet and slimy with food. Thanks, Ric

My first ever knife project is finished

It reminds me a lot of the first knife I ever made. The blade and handle shape are very similar. I used 01 tool steel, black linen Micarta, and ss pins. Did it with hand tools except drilling the pin holes. I think it took me 3-4 weeks to finish. good job! Ric

    Working out a screw size?

Have you tried an electronics supply place? I found a electronics supply/surplus store and they had a lot of small screws used for electronics assembly. Great place to scrounge around. I got some SS 1-72 x 0.5 in button heads, got 25-30 for less than a dollar. So for you dogs in the SF Bay...

    Working out a screw size?

Where was the knife made? If it wasn't made in the USA, it may be a metric thread ( maybe a M3 x 0.5 ?, 3mm = 0.1181 in.). If I remember correctly, the 4-40 and M3 x 0.5 are very similar in diameter, but the pitches are different. One thing I did before I got a pitch guage, is to use another...

    Gluing Kydex?

A couple of years ago I tried using some of the Hot Blue PVC adhesive. I clamped it in a vise overnight. It held pretty good, but I could still rip it apart. Haven't really played with it to give a good assessment. My thinking was that the solvent in the adhesive would work sort of like...

Chefs Knife Design / Your Opinion Please!

One personal preference I have is that I like the main cutting edge be parallel to the handle. I don't have to bend my wrist at an awkward angle. I also like a slight belly on my blades. I do agree with HHH, it depends on the end user.

How bout a little Solidworks fun?

I used to work with some mechanical engineers that were very proficient with SolidWorks. Amazing program. Tony could draw parts, and test fit them. I think it would also show the areas that wouldn't fit. Ric

How do your organize all the tiny stuff?

I have some things in the "plastic drawer" things. the other thing that I use the fishing tackle box thing. I got one of those Plano ones that has about 4 or 5 pull out drawers. I've also picked up some of the clear plastic boxes that they sell for storing fishing lures. Used Altoid tins...

    finished knife looks ??

I had what Ed described on my first few knives I made out of 01 steel using a motor oil quench (from the minivan....). When heated carefully like Doug described and preheated my quenching oil to ~ 130°F (~60°C), it seemed to eliminate the problem. I also used a 1 brick forge. Ric

    low cost knife making

If you have a local flooring company or cabinet shop, they may have some hard wood scrap flooring that you could use for handles. I found some hardwood scrap at a building materials recycling center. As DonL mentioned, spend a little extra and get some known steel. My first knife was 01...

Some more newbie questions, grind angles and loveless bolts

I tried gorilla glue for a small neck knife for the first time. I used masking tape to carefully mask the blade and bolster area where I didn't want the gorilla glue to stick. As the gorilla glue expanded, I wiped it off for about the first 20 minutes, then let it set over night. Peeled off...
