What is your (favorite) sharpening method?

I use WD40 as a honing oil. I finally cleaned it (after 36 years) with some Bar Keepers Friend. Put some on, scrubbed it with an old tooth brush let it set for about 30 minutes. Re scrubbed rinsed with lots of water, then let it dry out. I read some where that the chemicals in the Barkeeper's...

    100x100

My kids swim. Sometimes they total up their yardage as we eat dinner. My 12 year old can remember the sets and total the yardage in his head. He average about 4 miles per practice. Ric

    Cookies!

A classic. Unfortunately the nutrition police made Cookie go on a diet (he is now a little thinner) and he also eats fruits and veggies.

How thick should a high performance kitchen knife be?

I've made a few paring knives and a couple of slicers out of 01, flat ground with a distal taper. I usually start with 3/32" for larger knives and 1/16" for some of the smaller ones. Ric

    Teak as handle material?

RNST, I think I have some of that teak from the battleship Missouri. A friend of mine from years ago (Lon Epps) gave it to me. He warned me to watch out for miscellaneous pieces of shrapnel. He was an amazing wood worker. Terrorbl- check with some local flooring companies, sometimes...

    When Gremlins Attack

My dad always had a spare house key hidden in a magnetic box (the type for hiding an extra car key on your car). He kept on the inside of one of the down spouts. Saved me a couple of times. The only thing I didn't like about it was sometimes the spiders would hide in the box.

Bought first real grinder, help with accessories and set up?

feraldude, I have one of those Grizzlys. The belts I got with it were worthless. Get some quality belts like Doug Lester mentioned. I get my belts at truegrit. There are other places too. I'm sure other KnifeDogs will post their suppliers. The next VERY important thing to do is to replace...

What sort of safety precautions or equipment do you use?

Along with what Ed said about common sense, I try to ask myself "If it slips where will it go?" It can be a tool, a blade, your hand or any other body parts. I now wear a base ball cap when using the Grizzly because I accidentally sanded my forehead a little one day. Ric

I got a scare over the weekend!

I had my 10" table saw kick back a 3' x 3' x 3/4" plywood at me. Got a good bruise on my belly. About 2 months later a co worker showed me the same bruise on his belly, I said "Let me guess...." I had a safety fanatical shop teacher in jr. high. One of the many things he said "Don't stand...

    Good News Bad News

I'm in the same boat. Got laid off last week. After I get the initial stuff (health care for family, job search going etc...), I hope to spend a little more time getting back into making a few knives. On the up side, I'm not commuting 90 miles/day. Ric Lee

Question about screw sizes and drill bits

Bob, Do you have the Machinery's Handbook? It has a table in that gives guidelines for cutting threads. The table also takes into consideration the % thread and material thickness. This company has a very good assortment of screws and fasteners, many in stainless steel. I like them because...

Before you made your own knives..........

I carried a Case pen knife (dad gave it to me when I was 10). Then I got a Buck stockman when I was 13. I also carried a few Kershaws, Gerbers and a Mora fixed blade. these were all mid-late 60's -early 70's vintage. Still have them all. Ric
