Hey how do u flat grind a knife

The problems all of us will experience as we get older are coming straight at you. Some will not see them until they run you down. Luckily I was only side swiped. When it started interfering with my knife making, I knew I had to do something. The jig I have now for grinding will grind both...

Hey how do u flat grind a knife

This has been beat to death before. I made knives and ground freehand for 30 years. Then I came down with Parkinson's. The jigs I have made keep me making knives. Anyone can make one of these. The point is to make knives and not how you do it. Here are two pics using the jig and one...

    quench plate question

The plate does not have to lay directly on the ground bevels. The plates suck the heat right then. All I use to keep the plates tight on the blades is the weight of the plates themselves as I use steel plates 1" thick. I build my knives and grind the blades after they are heat treated.

    Chilling Plates

I will continue to share especially on heat treating. I am not trying to do anything but educate. I try to be as funny as a 67 year old man can be. Anyway, we all play with sharp and hot things. If I can find the time I will write a small treatise on steel aging.

    Chilling Plates

Sorry to be a rock in the road, but all you think is happening with cold plates is not happening. I've been heat treating over 26 years with all types of metal and after several trips to college in Michigan on metallurgy, welding, and being a x-ray welder for 40 years, there is a lot for you to...

    surface grinder

I bought one from Travis. I set it up to run with 2 X 48 or 2 X 72 belts. I also put a variable speed motor on it.

what exactly does rockwell hardness tell us?

There is more to reading the results of a hardness test than just the "R" factor. The R test can tell you if oven temps are on track. One should follow R tests through hardening, tempering, etc, to see if the complete heat treating is accomplished. I know everyone thinks tensile strength is a...

    Quenching Plates

I use steel plates that are 1" thick X 12" long X 4 " wide. Not necessary to clamp under force or stand on them. The blades stay as placed and do not warp.

    sloppy guard problems

If you are going to be using end mills as drill bits, then you better have a vise that can be locked down to your drill table. A end mill is used primarily for side milling. The end of the mill cutter is used to drill a hole and then mill it in a side direction. All of this must be locked...

    Dual Detent Friction Folder

You have a ball detent to keep it closed, but nothing to keep it from being bumped and closing on it's own. The stop pin stops the blade in open or closed position and only the ball detent for safe in open position.

need large folder parts, Where can I find them

You said your stop pins are 7/16"? Dang that is almost a half inch in diameter. Must be a bad hit on the key board. There are a lot of places to get the bolts you want, but be more specific as too correct diameter and thread. 303 is easy to machine because it has some added sulfur. I use it...

Anyone have any experiece with this in knife steels?

I am not the one that said it would go up 4 to 5 hardness points and I have no knowledge of your story of how it was supposed to happen. You will probably find that age hardening has to be done with low temperature heat being applied over a set time. My experience with testing for age growth...

Anyone have any experiece with this in knife steels?

I am not talking about difference in hardness points. If you don't have any books on heat treat procedures, google the subject and read about it. Strain ageing, precipitation hardening, it is all there for you to learn. Learn what happens at the microscopic stage. Here is one I am going to...

Anyone have any experiece with this in knife steels?

You guys need to get yourself some books on heat treating and all the rumors will be cleared up. Age hardening is true and is alive and well in the heat treatment world. Too many of you are listening to advice about heat treating that is unproven in a scientific sense. Just because a...

I got a heat treating foil question?

I have been heat treating for over 25 years. I have not only heat treated my own knives with great success but I have done heat treating for machine shops here. I say this for the millionth time, you do not need to put anything in your foil wrap to burn off oxygen, to use up air, etc, etc. If...
