    Yea that is wood. I have seen wood. I am pretty sure it is wood. Drop it in to water. If is sinks it is Ironwood and is very dense. It can't be oiled, stained, or stabilized. It makes the prefect knife handle material.

    i have used every imaginable vise there is in last 30 years. I don't see much difference between vises. I got mine at HF. I didn't pay much over 50.00 for it.

    Yes, Bill you can. But you want to pin the handle. Clean you grinding area and save your dust from your handle material. Put it aside. If you have any cracks where your seam is fill it with super glue and add the dust you saved. It will look close to one piece but there is always a seam.

    Yes it is a waste of your time. Give my buddy Brad Vice a call at 256-282-7988. He make Alabama Damascus. It is great Damascus for the price. You can get four blades out piece of his billet or $25 to $30 a blade.

    You can use anything like fingernail polish, wax, or paint use ferric chloride as your etching. I have seen some really cool blades done.

    I worked in mobile machine shops when I was in the Army. Some of our shops would open up to open air. Can You have like a Garden Cabinet or locker outside that you can lock. Build your knife shop in cabinet. Kinda like a Murphy's bed. Just a thought.

    what stone do you prefer (oil, water or diamond)

    At home I always use a 400 or 600 grit belt to finish my blades. I do have a Smith's tri stone on my bench. But it rarely gets used.
