    Knife Collecting as an Investment

True Larry, but one doesn't have to look too far to see how valuable Loveless knives are regardless of why or who made them or if justified.

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

Wait a minute guys. Our discussion quickly went from my stating many Loveless collectors didn't care if Bob actually made his knives, to Loveless collectors not caring if someone else re-handled Loveless knives from micarta to ivory and stag. Though I've heard this myth/rumor of Loveless...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

I'm sure you're not alone Larry. I don't disagree that a maker should create the knives which bare his name. There's this mystique surrounding Loveless knives and I don't see it disappearing. We need some die-hard Loveless collectors to enter into the discussion.

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

Les, I was going to shoot down your points one by one, however I think I would be waisting my time here in doing so. I will just say that there's NO BIG SECRET that Jim has been making knives in the Loveless shop for years and Steve Johnson did before him. You act as though you broke some...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

It was a Jay Hendrickson Hunter that was taken out of my luggage on my return home from the Reno ABS show. Jay being the outstanding fellow he is immediately went to work making me another. But instead of making me another hunter, he made me a Bowie so in the event the hunter was recovered I...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

WoW! That's got to be a record. I waited 4 1/2 years for a knife, picked it up at a show and it was stolen the very next day. :(

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

We seem to pretty much agree when it comes to investing in custom knives however not on your bolded statement above. I have put A LOT of hours into studying the Loveless market over the last three years or so. One, because I've been interested in investing in a piece for my collection and...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

You are correct, some may be staring at their knives for a very long time, others will be maintaining a 10-25% ROI on their knives long term while enjoying every minute of it. My collecting/investing seminars include a list of 10 guidelines for selling custom knives. Your stamp collector...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

Go figure, you would think a long time supporting customer would pay less, not more. I feel the most successful maker/collector relationship is one where both mutually benefit. The maker benefits from the collector's support, not just in buying knives but promoting the maker in the...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

I agree in regard to the ass kissing and to an extent in overpaying for knives on the secondary market, however "overpaying" is not easily defined. For example, has someone over paid if purchasing a knife on the secondary market for 10% over maker's price if another collector then offers them...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

Larry, you bring up a related and very interested topic. Knifemakers are businessmen (at least the successful ones are). So should they not show preferential treatment to collectors who promote them and purchase 6-10 knives per year over the collector who will purchase perhaps one knife...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

Thank you MT. I have utilized a collector/investor collecting philosophy developed during my many years collecting classic cars to obtain my custom knife collection with less investment than most would think. As both Les and I have stated, it takes considerable time and effort educating...

    Knife Collecting as an Investment

I agree. And, I don't suggust buying knives for investment as there are better investments out there. I'm just saying if a collector has the desire and studies the makers, knives and the market they can make a consistent and respectable ROI while doing something they enjoy.
