    Need a knife for a soldier...quick!!

Hey everyone. I wanted to put some feelers out there... One of my coworkers contacted me about possibly making a knife for his son who is graduating from the Air Force's Pararescue special forces group on April 16th. He wanted to get him something special for graduation. I would love to...

    help cru forge v

Sounds like your annealing procedure is ok. The data sheet suggests a hold at 1450F followed by a very slow cool. Try soaking the blades at 1200 and then straightening while hot. You can get away with straightening a soft blade cold at times, but Its a good idea to straighten a blade above...

    Harbor Freight Portaband

I agree. I bought one on sale, and I have it mounted vertically with a small table for it. Buy better blades (bimetal, name brands), and you'll be pleased. I also bought a cheap foot switch from Harbor Freight and clamped the trigger down on the saw, using the foot switch to control it. -nathan

    Knife finishes and coatings

Here's a VERY early knife of mine that I finished with a horseradish mustard patina. This blade is O1, and after I heat treated and finished grinding it, I cleaned the blade well, and then applied the mustard. I used my finger tip, dipping my finger into a pile of mustard and then dabbing it...

    HT

I see your point, Doug, but I think it's just a semantics game. What Wick is trying to say is that too many people just go to non-magnetic and as soon as it's there, they quench. The problem is that steel will go non-magnetic at 1414F, and 1095 should be quenched from around 1500F. You are...

My life flashed before my eyes!

Were you running the edge into the oncoming wheel? Yeah, on a sharpening system, run the wheels where the top is spinning away from yourself and the edge pointing in the same direction of the spin. Glad you're ok. That's scary stuff. I've had a blade tip bite through a belt before, and...

    Three motors, one VFD

Josh, I got the switches from Mouser Electronics. They were part number 633-S832-RO (3PDT ON-ON HIGH CAP). They're NKK switches, and they are beefy for what they are with a very firm switching action. You won't trip these with an accidental bump. Something substantial would have to drop or...

    Three motors, one VFD

Thanks, guys. Something to remember is to never throw the switches with the VFD running. In fact, on BF, Stacy suggested a safety cover, and that's a good idea. You may want to look into larger gauge wire as well. I may be on the shallow end of 14/4's power handling capacity, though it's...

    Three motors, one VFD

After going through the trouble and expense of setting up my VFD in a clean box and running the remote controls for it for my KMG, I just didn't want the headache or bill from doing the same thing two more times. However, after adding a disc grinder set up on a 3/4 hp 3phase motor and another...

You may be able to do the heating with a torch, but motor oil isn't going to cut it for a quench. 1095 does best with a very fast quench (formulated oil like Park's#50, brine, or water), but there's been good discussion about using canola oil on thinner blades with decent results. It may not...

Just FYI, I have been playing around with my website lately, and I decided to add some resources where I could find them. In the "resources" page, I have included a number of steel data sheets in .pdf form. I've tried to find the bets possible data sheets from industrial sources, but it's...

    Rust inhibitors???

Something to remember about leather is that it will hold moisture to an extent. So it's not that your sheath got exposed to moisture, it was likely already there, perhaps from the dye/forming processes. And as has been said, O1 will rust pretty quickly when not cared for. I've also found...

    Grinder Speed

Like the others, I think tha variable speed of some kind is the cat's meow. I worked on a direct drive Grizzly for years before going to a fully VS KMG, and I can't tell you how much difference it can make. --nathan
