    Deer antler

I would let it dry for at least one year, inside your shop. I have used it sooner than that, and had some scrinkage leaving the tang, and or guard, proud of the antler. Dale

    how thin before sharpening

I like thin so on skinners I go to .010" hunters usually .015" and then on choppers and camp knives.020-.030" it all depends on the use of the knife, and to some extent the steel used, the same with sharpening angles, my thin skinners get around 17 degrees, hunters and utilitys get 20 degrees...

Thanks for the tip Laurence, that sounds like a great idea. Mark, the electrical work was done buy the guy we bought the house and shop from, he didn't charge a thing for the wiring job, he does that kind of work, and heating and cooling work, and is a great guy. Thanks everyone Dale

    Sharpening with Belts

The setup for my Bader uses the same concept as the Sharp Shop Machine, in fact I was talking with the original maker of that machine at a gun show and he helped with my Bader setup, and made the blade clamp for me. I still want one of their machines, but the Bader does just as good, but I cant...

    My new shop

Here are some pics of my new shop, just being setup. I will have it all done in a few more days, I hope. It will have my mig welder in it as well as my mechanics tools. It is alot nicer than my little 12 x 24 storage building that I did have. More pics later when it is completed. The messy room...

    Design Critique

I like the overall design, with that said, I do agree with Cameron. I would play around with the point some by not dropping it as low, giving it more belly, it would be a great skinner. Also the handle may be a little short. But it looks good as it is too, just my personal taste. Dale

    score this weekend!

That is some nice burl, big too. You can get a moisture meter from Harbor Freight, less than $20.00. I have a small burl from a black jack tree, and it had been in my shop for 2 years, when cut into blocks it still has 12% moisture in it. I thought it was very dry till I checked it. Dale

How does one achieve this look with stag?

Haveing antler dyed and stabilized makes a nice looking handle from elk, and whitetail antlers. I have some from Woodlab.biz. in blue, purple, green and some brown. I need to get them on a knife soon. Dale

Any good way to hang belts to conserve space?

Thanks guys, that is how I have done it in the past, but I am running out of wall space, to many windows, and shelves I guess. I see one spot left, looks like it will be gone now, hehe. Thanks again. Dale

Any good way to hang belts to conserve space?

I am moving into a new shop, well a storage building, shop to me. I have improved most things in the setup from my old shop to conserve space, but belt storage just seems to be a real challenge to me. I have a large supply of belts on hand, 5-10 of each grit from 36-400 and a few 600-800 grit...

How to set up ventilation for working G10 ?

I use an old welding smoke exhaust vacume blower. It vacumes in the dust at the grinder through a 6 inch tube, and exhausts it through the wall of the shop via a 4 inch tube, where it blows it into a large tub with a small amount of water to keep the dust from blowing around, also puts out any...

    Super Hard Blade

I have no ideas on your problem, but would like to know more about these hardness testers.

    file knives

You can grind a file, if done very slowly and keep dipping it or dripping water over the wheel, and not lose the hardness. But you won't be able to drill holes in it, and the blade will most likely be to hard for a knife, other than maybe a small skinner. I guess to answer your question, yes it...

    air brush kit for sheaths?

I use a Testors brand brush made for model cars, found it at Walley World years ago. I use it to dye my sheaths, and yes I thin the dye for that, not sure about fading edges, never tried that. This brush uses CO-2 for the air supply, not the cheapest if you do alot of spraying, those little cans...

    Handles and bolster questions

I have used Dogwood. It is a hard wood, but not so stable, unless it is stabilized. I did have mine dyed and stabilized. In its natural state, I think it is kinda boring, not much grain or color, though there are some cuts that look better than others. Here is a pic of one with Dogwood, dyed...

    Antelope Horn?

I have used it for a handle, and it worked out fair. I left it in it's natural appearence on the outside. I removed all of the core, which was prety easy to do. I filled the inside with epoxy, and pinned it to the tang. This knife, as far as I know has never seen any use, just a show piece, so I...

    Band Saw blades for G10??

I use an 18tpi on G10 and have good life from them. Could it be that your saw is running to fast? I have a GNC band saw that runs on the fast side, and the blade life with it on G10 is short. My old Craftsman runs slower than the little cheap saw does, and blade life is pretty good. I have also...

    My father's old pocket knife

That is cool. And it is a shame about the generations of kids, who will not know about the outdoors, and tools like a knife. I have my dads last pocket knife and my grandpas as well, wouldn't take a thousand dollars for either one, and they are maybe worth twenty. But they are priceless to me...
