    Persimmon anyone?

Welcome gaelic, I see that you are new, so would like to welcome you to Knife Dogs. I also notice that you and I are sorta neighbors, I live near Stover, Mo. I have been going to cut a Persimmon tree off of our place and dry some wood also, I have seen a couple of knives at a local show a few...

    Stabilizing wood????

I have tried the home stabilizing, with a used pressure canner, and a vacume pump, and wood hardener. In my opinion it was a waste of time, oh it may have done some good, but not like the pros do. Places like Woodlab and others do a great job and the cost is reasonable for what you get. just my...

    Chevron 70 quench oil

Thanks Jason, that is what I was looking for. I use Brownells Tough Quench now for O1 and 1095, may be a little slow for 1095, I think it is a 9-10 sec. oil. I would like to have some Parks 50 for the 1095, but can't find it in small quantities. Thanks again, Dale

Opinion time: How should a knife be labeled by the maker?

My last name along with city and state. The reason is simple, if someone sees one of my knives, they know who made it and where at. A logo without your name really doesn't say much about who and where you are. Just my thoughts. Dale

    Chevron 70 quench oil

I found Jantz now has quench oil, it is Chevron Texaco 70. Does anyone have any experience with Chevron 70? Is it a fast or med. oil? I found this but it doen't mean much to me, it would appear it could be a fast oil, when it says the initial cooling rate of water...

    Couple of Etching questions...

I have a pad, and I have better results with a Qtip, don't know why. I use electrolite that came with my Personelizer Plus etcher, and get a good dark mark on carbon steel, but on CPm 154, and 440C it is not as dark as I would like. I very seldom clean after the etch, if all goes well that is...

    Inlace Acrylester - Questions

I also have used it from Jantz and other suppliers, with no problems other than when drilling holes. I have had customers request it. Not my favorite handle material, but it can look nice on some knives, kitchen knives mostly in my opinion. Just my 2 cents. Dale

    Newbie HT dilemma

I have a Evenheat oven and love it, not cheap. I have a friend that has a Sugarcreek oven with no digital controller and he loves it. The difference is he does only carbon steel with the Sugarcreek, and I do stainless and other air hardening steels that require long soaks and precise temp...

    New Shop Dog

Thanks Laurence for that reminder, I use a dust collector at the grinder to help, but I will still keep him away from the grinder. I have wondered if that had something to with my last German Shepard, Rambo's, health problems that got him, he had liver cancer, so I will be extra careful this...

How do I get a mirror finish on Stainless

I belt grind to 220 grit, then go to hand sanding from there using a flat sanding stick to backup the paper. I go up through the grits to 2000 grit, and use WD40 as a lube while sanding. As I progress up the grits I change from sanding the blade lengthwise then across then lengthwise and so on...

    New Shop Dog

Thanks guys. He is as hard headed as he is cute! Hope he is as good as Rambo was. We have had one day in the shop, and he done good, chewed on an old antler, and went to sleep.

What makes a hunter or a hunting knife?

Rex, Here is a pic of the knife that I mentioned, it has a 1" wide blade 4" long from the scales. I also use HC steels, O1, A2, D2 as well as CPM154 and 440C stainless steels. So far I have had the best edge holding from D2, with A2 not far behind it. I have also used 1095, but wanted...
