Quick way to add "1 of 1" to a knife?

I do like Rudy, only I have an old DOT MATRIX printer and print the stencil, works great for my serial numbers.

How should knife look before heat treat?

One thing to add, the thickness of the edge should be left thicker than what you want to end up with, you will need to clean the decarb off of the blade and that can be prety thick. So I like to leave my edge thickness on carbon steel around .030-.040" thick before heat treat, this also helps...

Flat/Scandi Jig and Grizzly modification, lots of pictures.

Mike928, that is a great job, thanks for doing that. I had always thought that there should be a way to just plug in the dimensions and have it done. Much easier than going through the whole formula.

Flat/Scandi Jig and Grizzly modification, lots of pictures.

Here is the formula to calculate the angle. It works from three dimensions, stock thickness, desired edge thickness, and grind height. I got this from someone else, don't remember who for sure, but they said that I could share it anytime. It took me severial tries to figure out how to do it, but...

    New project, a fillet knife

1/16" thick 440C works fine for a fillet blade. I have made severial fillets, and use a full flat grind, taking the edge down to .005 thick, with a secondary bevel. I have heat treated before grinding the bevels and still have had warpage problems, also have ground the bevels first and had no...

Flat/Scandi Jig and Grizzly modification, lots of pictures.

Very well done. I use one like it, only mine is made from a flat piece of stock for the bottom, with the blade clamp mounted in the middle, that way all I do is rotate the jig to grind from one side to the other, no need to remove the blade and stick out of the other end of the jig. I do full...

KD July KITH official picture thread.

I got my knife from J. Leclair today. Very well made and it is sharp. I got caught in the kitchen, playing with the new knife, and my wife put me to slicing tomatoes and an onion with it, and it done a great job slicing ripe tomatoes paper thin. I will get some pics of it cutting something as...

    What steel to use ?

I am with Doug on the A2 or D2 in the carbon steels for stock removal, and for stainless, 440C or CPM154 would be good choices. Dale

Ideas for portable band saw stand?

One thing that I see, if your tang follows the shape of your bolsters to form the guard, is you have a stress riser in your blade, at the ricasso and bolster area, where your tang drops to form the guard, it would be better if that was a radius instead of a sharp square inside corner, I hope...

Portable band saw for re sawing?

I would look for a good used older Craftsman, Atlas, or Delta or other major brand, wood cutting band saw, to cut blocks into scales. I have a metal cutting band saw, like the Harbour Freight one, and it would be very hard to cut 1-1/2 inch thick blocks of wood with any kind of precision. I...

Do you charge more for a hand rubbed mirror finish?

I do center on quality on all aspects of each knife! And my knives are working knives for hunters, and sell in the range of $100.00 to $225.00 at the high end, and that is using Cpm154 steel, and stabilized wood on handles, so at those prices when you throw an extra $10.00 in for sanding...

Do you charge more for a hand rubbed mirror finish?

After finding no faster, easier way to mirror finish, other than a few tips to speed it up a little. I got to thinking about pricing for a mirror finish, I have always charged a few dollars extra for a mirror finish, but not nearly enough to cover the extra time and paper cost. So my question...

    Purple and blue G-10

I am also looking for purple G10, I went over to Bladeforums, in the knifemakers supplies for sale forum, and found a guy selling burlap scales. I have sent him an email asking about fiberglass laminates. He goes by Fod on the forum, you may want to check with him, or I can pass along here what...
