    What difference does .......

Many times the alloy content - most frequently the Carbon content - has a rather large window of % fluctuation in a given steel type. For example, "The Heat Treater's Guide" gives the C content a range of 0.60 to 1.4. That's a huge difference. That's why it's often important to get some type of...

    chasing scratches

Don't use "polishing" or buffing to remove scratches. ALL! scratches need to be removed up to and beyond 2000 grit before you buff. And stay away from the grinder when doing ANY finish work. And, one tip on scratch removal: When sanding out scratches, you're not sanding scratches. You're...

    Bog Oak Fighter

A little something I've got made up for Blade Show 2013. A San Mai Fighter. Not only is the 1095 and 420 stainless San Mai pretty dramatic, but the handle is made from Stabilized Ancient Bog Oak. It has been carbon dated at 5460 years old! Here's the description from the fellow from whom I...

    Gidgee Hunter

This guy sent his own piece of Gidgee from Australia for me to use on his knife. I wish a had a whole box of this stuff. The blade is W2 and the take-down fittings are stainless. I like it when W1 or W2 sort of "sneak" in their own little bits of hamon quite unexpectedly. There are at...

    Quenching oil and 52100

Parks AAA would be a good choice. I'd use it for the O1 as well. And pre-heat it a bit to the 100+ degree range. Tai's second paragraph is good advice.

What are the parameters for a "hunter"?

Good thread. Guess it all comes down to being able to perform the task it's presented with. I don't know how many hunters I've made. I also have no idea how many deer I've dressed out in the cold and the dark with only a flashlight in my teeth or a head lamp, or possibly in the headlights of...

    Badger Knife Show passes anyone?

Make sure to stop by and see me, Tracy. The Badger show is a good one. Been running for over 30 years I believe. Took me three years to get a table. (And that was with "connections" :3:) You'll see a lot of people you know.

    Going Full Time...

Tracy, tell you what, there are many times when talking with other makers when we get around to sourcing materials and supplies, etc., and I ALWAYS!! say to be sure to check with Tracy. It's always been obvious to me that your "heart" is in this. Not just for the money, because we all know how...

    The "Deer Guide" Bowie

I am finally able to come up for air for a few weeks. This one goes out and then I can focus on the Arkansas Show a bit. One for a nice fella designed like one on my web site called The Deer Guide. A short 10" W2 blade with African Blackwood and fixed up with some wrought iron take-down...

    Bowie for Little Rock Show

Got this one just sent off to Scott Teaschner for some of his leather magic! It will be quite admirable I am certain. I'll be sure to post up some more pics when I get the sheath back. The Bowie is for a delivery in Little Rock to some chap from England. ;) W2 Bowie blade with a nice hamon...
