    Sourcing cable for Damascus

Awesome info guys, big thanks! Wade: my metal supplier has a 20 ton overhead crane, hence my first thought was that as a source. We've gotten to be friendly and he's very good to me. I know if I asked, next time the cable got changed out, he save it for me. Probably a life time supply! Rock...

This is what a "bad" day looks like!

Bubba: Just just for giggles you could try what I did for our big old Record. It had become really slack in and out. I can't remember the details of what I did, but the gist of it was I took it apart and put in and old lifter spring from an engine over the threaded shaft. I think I shortened it...

This is what a "bad" day looks like!

Must admit to thinking the same thing as you Count. :nothing: I had one peel open in slow-mo on me. Was quite graceful, really. Cheap one. The fact that you have to mail it to them for warranty is a bit of a joke. 4x the cost to ship as the price. Granted, it may have been a faulty casting. It...

    Suggestions for a mini-mill

DOH! Maybe someone has 4 mills and no press....... I'm the Norm Abrams of angle grinders. I hate changing disks..... ha ha and have 3 presses at current count. Looking to get a small one for the wood shop.....maybe :nothing:

    Sourcing cable for Damascus

Wow, that's hardcore Bubba!! Thanks Rudy, I'll check out high temp, but was thinking more used, for us beginners. Granted not knowing composition, could be wasted effort. Just looked at high temp. I have nothing to compare them to, but the prices don't seem too bad. It's the shipping that's...

    Suggestions for a mini-mill

Yeah, Paul is correct from my reading. Sorry Lawrence. You could do some VERY light pressure stuff on the X/Y plain, but research definitely backs what Paul says. Presses just aren't build to do those things. I'd not risk it. Then you'll be out a drill press and still not have a Mill. May want...

My firstwebsite is up. Looking for feed back.

Those are nice sites. Thanks DeMo. Something else I forgot to mention is, if you can, look at your site on various machines. Mac's, Microsoft, Linux based. Different browsers. 19" square screens to big 32" widescreens. It's important to check that the site looks proper on all. All the work it...

    False Neo-Tribal vs. True Neo-Tribal

Well I guess we can agree to disagree. I think it can be both an aesthetic style and nothing more or can be as much as one wants to get involved in all aspects of "it". I just don't think it fair to say it's "more" than that to another, when it might not be to that person. Just like...

My firstwebsite is up. Looking for feed back.

Looks pretty good. Not to visually busy and no "rotating bagel art". :) When going from one page to another, IE from your front page to "Fixed Blades": when clicking on an image in the gallery and hitting the browser back button, it goes from the enlarged image back to the previous page, the...

    Sourcing cable for Damascus

Thought I'd start a new post here to expand on the question I asked over on Wade's "Butt Kicker" post. I was looking for recommendations for the types of cable being used in cable Damascus. What/where are good sources? Anything to know that's crucial to forging it? Are there sources of...

    Butt Kicker

Excellent! Thanks Wade. Hadn't thought of elevator cables. First to come to mind was the over head crane cables at my metal supplier. I'm assuming that they must have to be changed out at predetermined intervals. Was looking for sources so I'd know where to start asking around. And yeah, love...

    Suggestions for a mini-mill

Keep in mind as well that a smaller Mill can do a lot of the same jobs as a bigger Mill, just slower. Shallower cuts and slower feed rates are required due to less power. The X,Y and Z axis are limiting the size of the piece you can work on.

    False Neo-Tribal vs. True Neo-Tribal

Randy, +1! And Archer has got it partly, too, IMHO. It can be a way of life, however, it's a style too and can be learned as such. It would be quite ironic that a Neo-Tribalist would take an exclusivist stance like you have to "live" it or you're not allowed. Not to say that's what was the...

3M Abrasive - We Need your Help (2)!

A sample box of abrasive belts/paper may be a better gift given this is a knife making forum..... I'm a one man show, with no time for phone calls and I hate talking on the phone. Having said that, price and performance. I've bought expensive abrasive products and some were excellent...

Cool! If I may, what cables are used for knifes like this? Off cranes? Tow trucks?

Can't call myself a knifemaker or can I?

Ding Ding!! We have a winner! Titles mean little, proof is in the puddin'. Should you disclaimer that you out source the blade, sure, it's the decent thing to do. But really it's the finishing that you do to it that puts the value in it. With out that, it's a knife shaped bit of scrap metal...

    Pitbull Fight

I like to describe it like getting slapped with a wet slice of boloney. Finnigan just has a thing for liking my head. He'll wait for me to lean over to tie my shoes. If I lie in bed with the laptop, he'll jump up, lay flat on my back with his front paws on my shoulders and lick my head for 20...
