    First knife WIP

Ok, pics as promised... I did get my thickness cleaned up to where my edge is within about .010 trom thickest to thinnest. Still need to clean up the plunges and do a bunch of hand sanding before ht, but I think I'm done filing the bevels themselves.

    Quench plates?

Thanks for the info! Like I said, I'm a very long way from doing HT on air quenching steels, but the thought came that the thinner sheets I have might potentially be useful in that way. Now I'll just have to find another use for them [emoji1] Not like I had a specific use in mind when I...

    Quench plates?

Just asking this more out of curiosity than anything, as I am a really long way from trying to HT my own air-cool steel. But anyhow... I have a bunch of 1/8 - 3/16 aluminum plate that I could easily stack/layer it to about 1". Would that work, or would the layering cause wierd expansion...

    First knife WIP

Well, I THOUGHT I finished filing the bevels in today... Upon inspection and a pass with the calipers I found that I got overly cautious filing on the tip area, and left myself thick by almost .040. On initial inspection I think its mostly on the first side I filed, but its hard to tell for...

    pyrometer

It might be hidden in the articles section or something... I've only ever been on his site on my phone, and I do remember that it's not vrry "mobile friendly "

    First knife WIP

Ok, small, pic-less update... Got the bevel filed in on one side, sanded all the big scratches out using the file for a sanding block. (Made sense to me, what the heck) Of course I forgot to snap a pic before I flipped it over and clamped it down, but I'll get a couple once I get the other side...

Christmas KITH Questions, PICS & Updates

I dunno how it would work going in deep, but the classic 'older than wood putty' woodworker trick is to mix a bunch of sanding dust from that wood with wood glue to make your own filler/putty. I don't know if that helps, but it might be worth a shot.

    My Lumber yard

Hehehe... where does that put me with the 3' + maple 3"x3" that's been kicking around my garage/shop for like 6 years, in addition to misc chunks of oak, cherry, and whatever else... I've been talking to and answering myself for years!! That is some good looking wood though Pool!

    G10 with carbon fiber pins?

I've been thinking a project or 2 ahead, and was thinking of trying to do something with g10 bolsters. I was wondering if anyone has done the CF pins in black g10, and how well they blended? I know they won't blend as well as peened like metals, but I'm curious. Thanks

    Heat treating files.

First off, a kitchen oven isn't going to do, nowhere near hot enough to anneal steel. Secondly, you'll see alot of the more experinced members here telling folks not to use "mystery steel". That's exactly what files are, especially newer ones. They may not even be any more than "case...

    First knife WIP

Ok, more progress. I got my swedge fully filed in, and did a little cleanup. File got away from me a little at the base of the plunge on one side cleaning up the plunge itself, but I'm planning on bringing my bevels up to where the swedge starts, so I think it won't show once I'm into hand...

    Another new guy question

So I'm about ready to set up and start filing on my bevels. But that, as with most things it seems, leads me to a question. How thin should I go on the edge? I've seen alot of answers, everything from about .015, up to .030 or more. Given that im working without a grinder, I'd really like...

    How do you know...

As of yet, no mistakes that make anything unusable. Mostly just file-marks in places I didn't want to get them, and the plunges on my swedge don't quite match, they line up ok, but they have s little different contour or something, just doesn't look quite right to me, but I'm a little worried...

Small Wheel Attachment Bearings Running Hot

I actually did a little research on bearings a little while ago. Based on what I learned, go for a bearing with a high ABEC number (i believe 9 is the highest ). In what i was reading it was saying ABEC 9 ratings are intended for aplications up to 10,000 rpm. Easy and fairly cheap source is...

    How do you know...

Thanks for the responses (and more are by all means welcome). I think I do feel alot the way most of you do. If or when I get to the stage where I'm making knives to sell them, I will definitely have certain standards. I think part of me was just asking the question out of impatience...

    Christmas gift wip.

Cool concept with the compass, I did more or less the same thing but in reverse. I colored the flats with a sharpie (could use dykem or something, but I had a sharpie), locked down my calipers, and scribed a line with the tip of the calipers. Shows up very well, as sth sctibe line removes the...

    How do you know...

Working my way on my first project, and I'm finding myself in a bit of a quandary. I see mistakes I've made already, and I'm doing my best to catch and correct as I go. I also know that I am very critical of my own work, and honestly will someday probably drive myself crazy if I don't keep it...
