can paxolin be used as micarta/g10 substitute?

That looks exactly like the brown canvas micarta that I have in the shop. I'd use it and not think twice. For a bit of color variation, try using leather dye on that stuff. My black leather dye soaks right in, but I haven't tried other shades yet.

    just getting started

I wouldn't much care for a half-horse grinder, but if that's all that's handy... Any reason why you decided on 440C instead of something else like O1 or D2? Really, the only thing on your list that you didn't mention is sand paper. Maybe I'm the weird guy, but I burn through a ton of sand...

    Grinder..

Both grinders do a good job, so I can't really say that one is better than the other except for price. Do you have the tools to complete both? Check out this link for some ideas that you might be able to incorporate into a unique design. http://gonza-rytec.rajce.idnes.cz/brusky/#album

    Big Green Grinding Machine

Very nice set up. I wish I had painted mine before full assembly, but that rust look is growing on me. One thing to think about is putting some kind of shield over the motor so grinding dust doesn't get in it. Positioned like it is, you're shooting sparks right towards the fan.

    Hidden tang using all thread

Or, do a no-weld attachment. Somebody on this board, or another, came up with the idea of attaching all-thread to the tang by drilling a small hole (same dia as allthread) about an inch in from the end of the tang. You then make a v-cut in the tang to connect the end of the tang to the hole...

Can Whitetail Deer Antler be used for scales?

Find out what your local game laws are regarding the sale of animal parts. Just found out that in SC, you cannot legally sell deer antler... so you charge the customer for the blade and fittings, and throw the antler in for free!

Ever try a stacked micarta handle?

I hope I'm safe as I bought this wrought iron from the head honcho here. It's part of a grain silo being demo'd. Measures about .250" thick, so it wouldn't take much to turn it into a nice pommel for an antler handle, but I'm not too good at soldering and wonder about putting a nut on the back...

Ever try a stacked micarta handle?

Can you weld/braze to wrought iron?

Ever try a stacked micarta handle?

I thought about that. It would be a lot easier to peen some all-thread, but it wouldn't look very good coming through the pommel and I don't have a flat-bottomed drill bit to drill halfway through the metal. I'm thinking I might just chuck this one up to experience and see how far I can pitch...

I think its for forging but I forget what it is.

Yea, that's for shoe making. Might work as a light anvil/bick for doing tinwork, too.

Dude, that's just awesome. I really need to buy a mill. Prayers out to the family. Hope all turns out well.

Ever try a stacked micarta handle?

That definitely looks good. If I can find a good crown, I just might go that route. I do have one spike from an elk and there's enough in there to do two full handles, but the bark looks to be incredibly thin. The tip is broken off and looks to have less than an eighth of workable exterior...

    Mill or Lathe?

Funny you mention turning a lathe into a disc sander, because that's exactly what I do with the shopsmith we have. It makes a super-great disc sander, but those 12" discs are expensive! We have all of the various woodworking attachments for it, but can't do metal on it. Why he wants a metal...

    Mill or Lathe?

Slotting a guard was my #1 thought. I've been working on a piece of steel with a needle file, and it just plain sucks! I think my hand's going to give way before the guard does. I really can't think of anything in a run-of-the-mill shop that a lathe can do for you other than true a part up...

    Neoprene/Horse-stall mat Handles?

Amazon and others carry it. I haven't tried all of their cements, but this one worked like a charm on nylon, rubber and leather. Very tough stuff!

    Neoprene/Horse-stall mat Handles?

FYI: The best contact cement I've run across for joining rubber is Barge Cement. I found mine in a camping store. Very durable and I've never seen it separate if you apply it according to the directions.

    Mill or Lathe?

Pops is looking to add yet another tool to the shop and is thinking about a lathe. He's actually bidding on one that's way up in Ohio! However, he asked me which I thought would be more usable in the garage, a lathe or a small mill. Says he's seen guys that can make a lathe work like a...

Ever try a stacked micarta handle?

I'm working on a bowie and am stuck on the handle. Part of me wants to do a stacked leather handle, but I already have some brown 3/8" micarta that could substitute. I think. Haven't seen a similar handle, so I have no idea how it would look. Lots of options out there, but....
