Using a charcoal barbeque to anneal

Getting to a dull red would have removed the temper, so you're good to go on that. Letting it cool slowly is the idea, vermiculite is great because it's clean and dry. Potting soil should work well as long as it's not too wet. Sand does the trick, too. Pull it out in the morning and...

    1911 picture thread

Wow, I'm honestly impressed that someone would recognize the mark. Ted did a great job on this pistol, literally rescuing in from the scrap pile, and I had him build me another. I'll have to send it back to him for engraving, like I promised. The custom, bottle-opening MSH with...

    Maker's Mark & Logo GAW

Very cool of you, Rock. I haven't forgotten our email exchange, just been working on some different ideas to send your way. This design stuff is a lot harder than it appears!

What "really" makes you take notice of a knife??

If it's a period piece, I'm a lot more forgiving about the looks, balance and flow of the piece. On modern knives, I cannot stand harsh lines and funky features that really don't serve a practical purpose. You might use that window-breaker one time in twenty years unless you're a fireman or...

    A new coating for blades?

If it's that good for steel, it might explain why a lot of smokers don't develop health problems related to smoking..... I wonder how they got it into/onto the steel and if I can do it at home! Maybe something like a mustard etch, but with butts and vinegar?

    Wrought Iron Alert in RI

I'd buy two pallets in a heartbeat if I lived anywhere near there! Heck, I'd probably buy all of it and then resell it to blacksmiths and such, but I'd love to have some for around the house!!

    Input on my WIP

Very nice finish, and the stencil is great. I'm all for neat, clean lines! You've done well and I'm sure the future is bright for one with your talent.

New prototype sheath for a prototype knife

I'm tracking, now. Sorta like a pistol holster with a thumb-break! Very neat. If I could do leatherwork half as well as that, I'd steal your idea. As it is, I think you're safe for a few years! ;)

New prototype sheath for a prototype knife

Very neat idea. I like it, but can see how the leather would wear over time. How about drilling a 1/8" hole in the welt, right at the bump, and gluing in a small piece of micarta rod? It would give the guard something hard to ride against and make the leather of the welt just a bit stiffer...

Marriage Knives, A WIP for some good folks.

The integral guard came off yesterday. Unfortunately, it was just too far back and was used more as a sub-hilt than anything. This design has been very very tricky to work out because my hand is so much bigger than the person the knife is going to. What feels "right" to me will be too large...

    New Cheap Drill Press

Next thing you know, you're going to have a full-on shop! Congrats on the purchase, I'm sure it will do well for you.

    Giveaway for New Makers!

I'm most definitely not in. I have all that stuff and would much rather see it go to some kid out there that's game to give it a whirl. Thank you, though, for stepping up in such a unique way. Says a lot about you.

    Google sketchup tutorial?

I'm certainly not a computer guy, but if you search for "sketch up tutorial" you'll get dozens of hits. Knife-specific is irrelevant because the basics of making a house or the like go hand-in-hand with making a knife. Heck, I made a beautiful mock-up of a canoe hull and sliding seat apparatus...

Marriage Knives, A WIP for some good folks.

As it was told to me, the Tradition of the Marriage Knives is as ancient as man himself. Like a marriage, you craft two knives out of one piece of stock. Got an invite to a wedding in entirely too short a while and have to kinda scramble to get something decent ready. I had wanted to do...

    What's he doing?

This triple-quench was prior to the hardening stage, he says. If he's normalizing before hardening, it's a technique I've never heard of before.

    What's he doing?

No disrespect intended to Andrew as he's one of the finest craftsman I've ever seen. But, I don't get what he's saying here. If you watch the video, at 8:54 he quenches the blade three times and talks about, I'm guessing, making the grain pop or pulse. I just don't understand what he's...

I thought this was a little odd. Scam?

IIRC, I first heard about this guy on this forum or another knife forum. One of the members was approached about a review of his works (other than a knife, I think it was a belt) and sent the guy a few samples. He never got anything in return. The con-man uses legit magazines, ezines, and...

    2nd Knife Attempt Take 1

Broke in two places?!?!?! Wow, but still fixable to get you by until you can find some 1-2-3 blocks. What you need to do is forget about putting the tension on the blade with that bolt. Then, you slide the blade up until it's between the jaws at the loop. You have plenty of metal in that...
