Anyone know about old pianos and if the keys are ivory?

OK, the people responded to my request for info. The keys are PLASTIC. They knew when I asked if they were one or two piece what I wanted. I thanked them and told them I could not use it. Nice people though.

Anyone know about old pianos and if the keys are ivory?

I found a web page that said that the laminates are 0.03 thick, WAY to thin. But I also learned that the keys made of Ivory are two pieces, one wide one and one thin one where the key narrows and there is a line where the pieces join. Plastic keys are one piece. I was hoping I found a gold mine...

I can get an old piano for free. I do not know how old it is and am curious what the chances are the key have ivory on them. I also do not know how thick the ivory on key is but I would think they would work for folder scales. Anyone know anything about this? Here is the ad for the...

    Heat Treating Blanks

You will not be able to hand file hardened steel. The hardened blades are ground on a grinder like a KMG. If you don't have a belt grinder you should grind before heat treat.

    How about a mokume forum?

Copper and brass it is. Man that stuff is pricey. I understand the apprehension to stick that in a forge. One screw up and you can go broke. So, is there a way to make copper and brass less likely to tarnish? How about using a cheap silver wedding ring from Wally World and using it as a liner...

Pivot pins for scale release - different form regular pins?

Hey guys, Are the pivot pins used for scale release autos different than the 1/8" barrel pins? Are they a step of some sort? Also the pivot for the lock bar, What is the best method to mount this since it will only be mounted on one side? Just a flat head screw and thread lock? Thanks...

    How about a mokume forum?

Delbert, Where would someone go to get the gold, silver and other materials to make mokume. I can get brass and copper but want non-tarnishing stuff of a higher grade. Will the tutorial you will be doing in the next couple weeks be the same procedure for these materials as for copper and...

Argon purge for oven, What do you think?

Gene Osborn used to do that. Also, Paragon heat treating ovens now have the piping as an option. I talked to them about it and was told that you have to kinda blast it in the very beginning to purge the oven and then just trickle it from then on to keep it purged, sounds like a pretty good...

What would you like to see in a Heat Treating Video

Having been into knife making for a quite some time and getting hit with questions, a LOT of questions, I think a good basic explanation of what happens in the steel during hardening and tempering would be a good idea. What changes to what during the heating, why soak at temp? The materials are...

Please allow me to introduce my self

Jon, What do you have for grinding tools? That will be a MAJOR factor in how you can get the results you are looking for. Grinding advise is worthless if you don't have a grinder and filing advise is equally worthless if you are working on pre-hardened blade blanks. Basically, there are a lot...

I have 1lb ferric chloride powder

Store it in plastic. I have some I used to use before my five year break in knifemaking and the other day I put a piece of damascus in it that I found and it still works fine. It is actually iron chloride and in my opinion gets stronger over time when used as more iron is added to the solution...

How do I post afolder for sale?

Frank, When you write your posting there are small pictures at the top of the writing space. One of them looks like a paper clip. Point at it with your mouse and a little sign shows up and says "Attachments". Click on that and it will open a window so you can locate the photo you want to...

    Plastic plate for spacer material

The space material at the knife supply will hold up very well so you don't need to doubt that. As for the plastic plates for liners you probably read that in another forum but the jist of it is to use picnic plates because they are brightly colored and fairly thick and show up very well as...

OK, been gone for a while, but what are the little rods?

You are probably seeing magnesium or ferro rods. You scrape the back of the knife against them and it throws sparks for starting fires. I am guessing this is what you are seeing.
