    Damage from sheaths

I use a kydex sheath with one of my personal knives with a blued blade. It has not scratched. I've made sure to keep it clean and haven't had any problems out of it. However, I have had it happen when I first started making them. Mostly when the blade is taller than the handle. I think...

    better pics....suggestions welcome

At SHOKR's suggestion not long ago, I started looking into ways of getting better photo's of my knives. In the past I just found a nice bright day and a spot outside. Sometimes that works, sometimes it just gets me by. I finally did some research on the subject and built a light tent using...

    Boot leather scrap for sheaths

I do drill the holes, but not too big. You want it to be tight, or you want to mold the leather so it will grab. I don't know man, try the leather/kydex mix if you want. For me it would just be extra steps that aren't necessary unless you had a good reason or just wanted something unique or...

looks good George, did you encounter anything that you didn't expect? I'll hopefully be able to finally start mine after Christmas. I've got several orders to get done and no time for playing with folders yet

Trade secrets? Original ideas? Sharing? Copy cats?

I could have sworn I saw that he did patent it, or perhaps it was just an attempt. I thought I even saw the form linked on another forum. But I might have been confused.

    Boot leather scrap for sheaths

http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/9052-72.aspx?tcd=14-L07TEM ^this is pretty good stuff for not much and can probably last you for 15 sheaths. That about $6 or $7 a sheath before shipping. I've found better deals than that though getting the economy stuff. The economy sides are not...

I got caught flat footed today.

I had a similar situation recently. A guy tells me he wants one of my knifes because he's tired of his gerber not holding an edge. I told him, yeah, you can put down $100 on something production that will hold that edge and have something that everybody else has. Or at that price point, you...

Trade secrets? Original ideas? Sharing? Copy cats?

One of my recent knives had a hole in the quillion right behind the choil. No sooner did I post a pic on another site and someone came to me screaming that I was infringing on Busse's patent for that hole. I started looking around and it appears that he will actually go after those that use...

    Boot leather scrap for sheaths

my first few sheaths were made from scrap packs I picked up at hobby lobby. I felt always limited by what you can do with scraps though. Get on Tandy's mailing lists. A couple of times a year they will do a sell on economy sides. Last year I picked up some 7 to 8 oz economy double shoulders...

Ferric chloride how do I mix it

The very first knife I blued, rubbed on the kydex sheath (close to the first sheath as well, before I figured out how to do it better) when drawing and re-sheathing the knife. That rubbing action did remove some of the blue. However, with the following knifes, It hasn't hurt the finish at all...

Suggestions for good clean bevels and ricassos?

I mark where the edge will stop on the bottom spine (what will be the edge) so you can see it from both sides while grinding. As J. Doyle mentioned, cut at a 45 degree-ish angle first to get down to your pre heat treat edge thickness, then work up. I also start the very first touch to the belt...

Ferric chloride how do I mix it

I can agree that if you're looking for perfection, it isn't the way to go as I already mentioned. I'm not lying to myself that it's supurb, but in any normal light as demonstrated by the first pic, you can't really see any imperfections. The second pic was under massive light, mainly the sun...

    A couple of new customs

while I'm getting better and grinding and finishes, my picture taking skills are still pretty bad. It's on my to-do list. 1095 with black g10 and 1095 with blackwood and zebrawood. both have about 3.5 inch blades.

    My first blades

getting better for sure! go to supergrit.com and you'll find all the belts you need. Ceramic belts and even a cork belt that's great for a satin finish. The only other belt I use right now is a scotchbrite belt I got from jantz. It helps with transitioning from the ceramic to the cork imo.

Ferric chloride how do I mix it

I wouldn't say the ones I've done came out with what I would call "perfection", but they haven't looked bad either. I first stone wash the finish, clean the blade VERY well with acetone using gloves, let it dry, apply the cold blue (super blue works better than perma blue) quickly and keep...

Ferric chloride how do I mix it

I use boiling vinager in a pan. you don't want to leave in on too long in the heat. But it blackens a blade in about 10 minutes. I usually nutralize it in the sink under running water and scrub with a steel wool to dull it down to a gray with pretty good results. I've never left it black but...

How to prevent this? fit/finish question

faster than working in a garage in the middle of Mississippi in July, lol....I had to learn to work quick fast and in a hurry when 5 minute epoxy becomes 1 minute goop. The things I've glued to a knife handle unintentionally: c-clamps, the mixing stick, my fingers (one of my first knives came...

How to prevent this? fit/finish question

Without being there it's hard to tell what the exact problem was. However, I do my work with a hand drill. Doing it like that, if your hole is just a little bit angled (not perfectly straight up and down) through the 2 scales and the tang, it can make fitting very difficult. kinda like a...
