    First knife, critiques welcome.

That would be the closest you could come to working in another maker's shop and having him critique each step. I think it's a great idea. David

    First knife, critiques welcome.

I am not personally familiar with Peters heat treating, but others endorse him so I'm sure he's fine. Delbert Ealy is a member here on KD and makes damascus with O-1. He can heat treat your blades. If you're using a file or some grinder that's slow or not particularly powerful you will need to...

    First knife, critiques welcome.

Tim, it's not bad for your first knife. The bevels remind me of my first knife, very low and at a broad angle. It was more like a cold chisel than a slicing tool. If you'll run your bevel up higher you'll have a knife with better geometry. And if you're going to use O-1 you do need an oven or a...

What sort of safety precautions or equipment do you use?

Safety? Is this supposed to be safe? These are only a couple of injuries I've sustained. The thumbs are routine, but the scalping was not. (As you can see, they can rebuild you!) Plenty of cuts and scrapes, and a few scars. I wear a respirator when I'm making dust, glasses when turning or...

    Pushy Joe Public

Petie, have you thought what you'll do when you have 25 knives sitting on your shelf and no one wants them, but wouldn't mind you making some other model? Not taking orders is fine if you're making knives as a hobby and you have a regular job. However, if you're a full time professional maker...

Blade Steel. What to use? Expert opinions needed.

Blue. Paragon Knives? If we help do we get our pictures taken with Miss Paragon? THat may not go over well with Ed since he's married, but I'm single. I think you may have to look at this a little differently because you're a production company. I wouldn't argue with Ed on the steels...

Blade Steel. What to use? Expert opinions needed.

You do know you're really going to get the pot stirred with this thread, don't you? #1 Best steel: a. Probably Elmax or s30v, with CPM154 as the runner up. b. O-1 There is no runner up! #2 Best bang a. 154cm, with 440c as the runner up. b. W1 (1095), 1084 work well. I've only used...

    best steels for tactical knives

Figured there was some kind of "field" finish, but you still have to grind it pretty finely before bead blasting or you'll get a nice soft subdued finish on top of grinder marks. s30v eats up P400 belts! Elmax does too, but not as bad.

    best steels for tactical knives

The only suppliers I know of selling Bohler steels, the Elmax, are USA Knifemaker's Supply (BossDog) and Alpha KNife Supply. Couldn't tell you how it compares exactly as I haven't bought s30v in some time. It is on the expensive side though, but so are all the good steels no matter where they...

    best steels for tactical knives

Given the choices in your poll I'd say s30v, but your choices are very limited. In reality I'd go with Elmax. Supposed to perform about like s30v but isn't such a pain to work with and it looks good when finished. David

    Layout dye problems. Any help?

I quit using any lay out fluid many years ago. It's expensive, it stinks, and it doesn't say on very well. I use a black chisel point magic marker. It holds up just as well and is cheap. It also dries instantly. When fitting guards to blades I run it inside the slot to highlight the tight spots...

    A couple of IKBS questions

As fumble fingered as I can be, Brett, being able to just pick up and dust off one is worth it!

Looking For Digital Camo Knfe Scales

If I hadn't taken a look at your site I would have thought the knife was heavily photoshopped! Do the colors and pattern match up well with the current US military uniforms and gear? David

    Model 11

Nice lines on this model, Les. Still like your daggers a little better, but this is cool! David

    A couple of IKBS questions

Brett, The IKBS patent covers the fact that you put a recess into part of the knife and throw in some small balls to create a frictionless thrust bearing so the blade will rotate freely. The size of the balls does not matter. Putting your recess in the blade may or may not matter from the...

Metal Texturing and Finishes... Need some help

Thanks, Sean. Yep, I have a video. Don't have any on hand so I just send people to Center Cross. I still get my royalty. I've attached some pictures of cut textures 1. This little stag hunter has texture on the tang around the scales. The steel is 154cm, and I cut the texture after heat...

Metal Texturing and Finishes... Need some help

Don't know a site for texturing metals. I do know of a DVD though. Go to http://centercross.com/cciv/videos.htm and down to "Sculpting With David Broadwell". Yeah, that's me. I discuss texturing in the video. I generally use a variety of burrs, mostly carbide but sometimes diamond, to cut...

Free Elmax Super Steel from Uddeholm - Give away updated with files

I've played with Elmax a couple of times now. I think most of us makers are going to like it. I sure do. Sometimes you want Knife Dogs, other times you just want a good beer. One's not necessarily better than the other, it just depends on the mood. David

Another Warning: concealed carry permit , maybe knives also

Why do you suppose that is, Murph? It seems there are more cases of PTSD from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts than from previous wars. In comparison to Vietnam they are small conflicts with far fewer casualties, yet you at least hear of more cases. I know there were cases from WW2, but they...
