I finished up this knife for The Gathering coming up next weekend in Vegas. You can see more pictures and the specs down in my forum. David

416 stainless is getting scarce - what 400 or 300 ss will you switch to and why?

Doug, since this isn't a court of law I don't believe hearsay is a problem. The fact is most engravers who work on our knives won't cut 303, or if they will they charge more. As you push the line it work hardens, then tears out leaving a ragged cut. It takes extra time to clean up the cuts. On...

    scandalous! Heresy!

My experience with lawn mower blades on lawn mowers has not been good, so I wouldn't use one on a knife I made. . . unless I lived in a Mad Max universe! Unless you know for certain what blades are made with good steel, you can't be sure you are using 5160 or some mediocre stuff. I leave...

PKA Show & The USN Gathering

The lay out of the tables will seem odd, but you'll find it to be wonderful once you get used to it. You can talk business and not be distracted by your neighbors and their customers, and when the rock stars have their lotteries they won't interfere with you. One or two shows have talked about...

PKA Show & The USN Gathering

No to the PKA show, yes to The Gathering. I went last year and it was the best knife show I'd had in years! That was good, since I had all that de-tox from tobacco smoke to deal with ! Should be less of a problem this year. It's certainly a different kind of show. Wish other shows would...

Anyone know about old pianos and if the keys are ivory?

Logrus9 is right, the ivory keys have just a veneer on the top surface. The ones I've seen probably weren't 1/16" thick. I've been told that you can soak the keys in the bathtub and the glue will break free. The ivory will warp, but you put them on a flat surface with newspaper around them and...

416 stainless is getting scarce - what 400 or 300 ss will you switch to and why?

Try 410. It's close enough to 416. 304 is okay for making fittings, but if you want your knife engraved most engravers hate it. It tends to work harden and leave a somewhat ragged cut. 410 works like 416. David

    Harbor Freight Surface Grinder??

Happy to help, JC. Here are some other comments and a question: 1. Is there a specific reason you feel you need a surface grinder? I've been making knives for 29 years, and folders for 18. I don't have a surface grinder. I do have a small mill with which I can cut down stock, then hand surface...

    Harbor Freight Surface Grinder??

You should expect problems like poor accuracy and poor finish. HF like Enco, Grizzly and other companies that sell the "import" tools get them all from the same place in mainland China. Some are good, some are not. I have not bought a machine tool from HF but I have looked at them closely. HF...

My Folder Was Siezed By U.K. Customs!!

And that is a good policy. The buyers have to take responsibility for the laws of their own countries. It's not your fault, Shane, that UK customs seized the knife. I have that same policy, and it applies to insurance and taxes. I have been asked to label the knives as a hunting knife, a...

My Folder Was Siezed By U.K. Customs!!

In the UK you'll find large oil barrels outside police sub stations for collecting knives, and the government encourages people to go about knife free by throwing them away in those barrels. There are laws governing words you can say about your knives. Kitchen knives are under development that...

    Ironwood stainless caper

Nice knife. As a rule I also don't like most two wood handles, but this one works. Probably because the grain doesn't clash like ironwood burl and curly maple would. The black ebony is subtle and allows the grain and color of the ironwood to stand out without being over powered. The knife...

Come to the 2010 Knifemakers Guild Show!

Wow, Mike, sounds like the best reason to attend the Guild show is the. . . hotel! David

    Best place to buy CA?

I walk around the corner to Hobby Lobby. They have CA in the model section. Usually 2 or 3 viscosities. It always takes a long time though. All those models take me back to my childhood! David

    Dremel tool is good, but...

Generally speaking, Dremel tools are for hobbyists, and Foredoms are for professionals. Dremel is really pretty light duty and won't hold up to much long term heavy shop use. I have a "feux" Foredom. It's a motor from overseas with a Foredom flex shaft and hand piece. It works well for heavy...

    Kitchen knives you have built

I made the santuko below from 1/8" CPM154. I ground it from edge to spine after I heat treated it. The smaller knife was made from a small sample of Bohler's Vanax 35. It's .110" stock and came to me heat treated. Bohler had it as a display at Blade. At this time all it has cut is that one...

First stab at a mini subhilt.

Usually it's that second piece of metal in the handle, the one behind the guard! Looks good. Reminds me of boot knife sized sub hilts which you just don't see much these days. David

    Textured Blackwood hunter

Nicely done, Bing. The "V" shape suits the angles of your hunter, and wrapping it around the butt gave it a completed look. I know Ed appreciates the fact that you actually listened to what he said! David
