    Flat grinding platten... tempering ?

So Ed, you interested in modifying one of those six remaining platen plates and parting with it?

New watch for a very good customer

Wishing and dreaming! I've thought of building a watch or two. Not so much the tactical look, although Damasteel and CF are pretty cool. Damascus or precious metal mokume case, and I'd send the face to my engraver friend, Ray Cover, or a new engraver I know, a lady named Kim. Maybe a dragon...

New watch for a very good customer

I don't know. Some surgeons seem rather psychotic! Have much trouble machining the damascus body to accept the movement? I am not such a watch purist that I would have to have a mechanical movement. Both of my watches are quartz. Others might disagree, so I'm sure if you could mount a...

    Flat grinding platten... tempering ?

Nice to have the Shell Answer Man here! I believe you're using a piece of tempered window glass, correct Ed? Have you tried the ceramic platen plates that are being sold? If so, how do they compare to your glass plate? Did you round the top and bottom edges with a diamond wheel? I made a wear...

    Conversion 4 surface grinder

Yeah, I guess it's hard to get 18" wide abrasive belts! I should be able to measure the hub of my original 8" wheel, then use the shaft and bearing mounts from it. That will keep the cost down and I don't have to worry about mounting the new wheel to my grinder. Thanks for the info. David

    Conversion 4 surface grinder

Thanks, Ed. I got a general estimate from Sunray for a 10" wheel a month or two ago after someone posted their site on another thread. The price was so much less that a rubber wheel from a dealer for my Square Wheel that I wondered if it wasn't too good to be true! I don't know if it came with...

    Getting ivory

Doug, you can't take any African elephant ivory out of the country anyway! Do you think that if I make a knife with ivory and a Japanese or German or English or whomever buyer comes here to take delivery that his home country's customs people are going to let him bring it in just because I have...

    Getting ivory

Doug, if you are a US maker using ivory that is technically legal as per the US law enacted 21 years ago (giving all A. elephant ivory in the US legal status) and you sell it to a US buyer how is it that a custom official would get involved? Customs only deals with imports. (The original poster...

    Getting ivory

What I'm curious about is how do you get POST ban elephant ivory? Are there dealers who sell post ban ivory in the US? Has the US government changed its official policy regarding the use of African elephant ivory in the last 20 years? As I understand it, back in 1989 when the CITES treaty...

    Micro Mesh

I've used the MM sheets but not the belts. They lay down a softer more even finish on my titanium pen parts so on engraved pens I can lay down a finer finish and have little or no reflective problems compared to an engraved stainless part. Typically, stainless is taken to around 600 grit; any...

    The best sandpaper

I use 3M silicon carbide paper. Found some close outs on ebay and got a lot of it at a low price. I tried other SC wet/dry papers and never liked them. Never heard of black ice. What is it, Bill? David

    New Slip-Joint

You know, I never used to like slip joints, but in the last couple of years I'm finding them interesting. Must be getting mellow now that I'm past 50! Chuck, your knife more than many is one I like. The fat clip point blade you ground is a nice combination with that steel as it shows the...

    Fat Boy model

"Fat Boy". Reminds me of two things I like, a particular Harley-Davidson model, and me! Good looking knife, Tom. I like the Norris damascus, and that scale material has a nice wood-like look to it. Much better than pink and purple! Sometimes I find that a pivot that stands a little proud...

    Stainless Damascus Bolsters?

VERY CAREFULLY! First, if you harden your bolsters they won't be as likely to dent if you miss. I use a small ball peen hammer, maybe 4 or 6 ounces, to get started. Sometimes I switch to a heavier hammer, but that may not be necessary with gold pins. The gold isn't going to be as hard...
