Any Dogs been to the AG Russell show?

Delbert, The only things I've heard through the grapevine about the AGR show were that it was poorly attended and sales were lousy overall. Now that's from a knifemaker's perspective. As a supplier to other makers it is possible that you could have a fair show if those other makers were in a...

    Steel choice

CPM154 for sure. Good formula based upon the original 154cm, but made with Crucible's powder metallurgy technique. It's very clean and uniform. I believe there is some vanadium added for grain refinement but not lots. Pros: Heat treatment is not complicated and can be done easily enough in...

    Show your swords!!!

So Stacy, I'm thinking you might have a bit of an interest in Japanese swords? :D I've wrapped a few tanto handles, but I only had my bench vise to hold the handles. Does your tsuka-maki stand rotate? Nice shots! David

    1911 picture thread

Tracy, go get yourself a 1911 and end the pain! Here is mine, a Kimber. It's about as basic a Kimber as they made. I used it when I was shooting NRA Bullseye and had a red dot sight on a clamp mount. That's what rubbed the blueing on the frame. Sure is a good shooter. David

Why a knifemaker should carry one of his knives.

It's good to see more knifemakers have finally figured this out. I remember many years ago reading in Blade in the "What Do You Carry" section about one of the top ABS makers. At any given time he had a couple of Buck knives on him. Another maker who was one of the finest art knifemakers also...

    "W"s from Walla Walla

Bruce, are you going to have the guard on this one engraved? It sure suited the OTHER ONE! :D This is one of those knives that makes me wish I could afford to be a collector as well as a maker. And Roger, good to see you here. I'm really enjoying your WIP, Bruce. It's very informative...

    "W"s from Walla Walla

I occasionally use the SC belts for stone handles and carbon fiber. They cut the stone while all the others don't, plus they are wet/dry belts and keep the carbon fiber dust out of the air. I don't use them for anything else. David

    "W"s from Walla Walla

Silocon carbide belts will cut carbide. I've re-sharpened some carbide drills, and of course back in the day we used SC wheels to form and sharpen cemented carbide tools. The belts we normally use won't, so I just might check into one. Thanks, David

    "W"s from Walla Walla

Bruce, this is very interesting to watch. Shoot, there's enough details that I may be ready to forge some damascus! I've seen several hardened steel file guides for squaring the shoulders for a guard, but never one with carbide faces. I'm assuming that because it's carbide and that you aren't...

    Amish Made Knives

There was an Amish maker back in the early 90s. Don't recall his name. He placed ads in Blade magazine regularly. He gave a mailing address but stated in the ad "Amish - no phone". David

    "W"s from Walla Walla

You know Bruce, I was enjoying this thread of yours until that last picture. Just another reminder that I lost! Seriously, this is an interesting WIP. David

Not a knife but it is custom...custom cane that is

Keith, that's a very interesting cane. In G-10 it should be pretty tough! You mention your back. Are you using a cane at this time? David

    Micarta ?

It almost sounds like the old ivory paper micarta. Got any pictures of the knife Fred? David

Dilute Ferric Chloride, Yes or No?

Too strong and aggressive. It's easier to control the depth of the etch if it is diluted. Some find the "look" a little better with diluted etchant. Thanks, Josh. My local RS manager was thinking that the company would no longer be carrying it since he couldn't find any in the central US...

    Anodizing Titanium Question ?

Ralph Turnbull told me years ago about Coke. I never liked it. I have a box of TSP that's been around for many years, and yes, it has phosphates in it. I put a couple of heaping tablespoons in a quart jar. We have pretty good water here so I don't bother with distilled. I use the same power...

Dilute Ferric Chloride, Yes or No?

When I used Radio Shack's etchant I diluted it like Chuck. I tried it weaker but it took longer than I wanted. Last time I needed ferric chloride RS didn't have it. And not just my local stores, but all of them within the region. There just wasn't any! Got some dry mix off ebay and have been...

    My latest project

Greg, that is a fine looking knife. Bronze is a great metal for fittings, and its color is very complimentary to the wood. It should age into a nice patina. David

    New Look

That's one BAD possum! All that info may be too much for a blade mark unless it's pretty large. If you can get it all on the ricasso of a small folder or fixed blade it should be pretty distinctive. I think everyone will know who that critter belongs to! David

help me out - I need pic's of jigs - Calling all jig pics!

Where does it stop, Frank? At what point do you cross the line and stop being a knifemaker, one who makes knives by hand, and become the operator of a knife manufacturing facility? If you like grinding with a jig, you could probably find an old mechanical blade grinder like the old factories...

    Dagger

Very nice dagger, Dave. Engraving adds a nice touch. Try using 416 stainless when you are going to engrave. It cuts cleanly and doesn't eat up your gravers. David
