    utilitarian knife

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got a request for a Pig Zipper style of knife. The customer wanted to keep it simple, utilitarian, and sturdy. I kept things simple and left out jimping, file work, mosaic pins, and a high grit finish. I used...

    Progression

I only have a couple of the knives I've made but I do look back at photos every now and then to check to see if I'm getting better. I have been able to determine that I now have a kind of personal style to my knives and I am getting a little better.

    Three ready for sheaths

Dave, I have always liked the way that you take the time to work your handles contours. The added effort really shows and makes for a very refined looking tool. Fantastic work!

    bullwhips

That is some great work. I've done a little braiding on much smaller items and it made my hands cramp up and hurt very much bad. I can't imagine being able to braid those whips.

    Twins

Thanks guys. I had never made two knives that were alike in profile before. Never thought I wanted to but it was a fun project. I wish I could see the faces of the young men when they receive their knives. I hope the knives serve them well for many years.

Before you made your own knives..........

what knife did you carry? I have not been making knives near as long as many of the folks at Knife Dogs. I still remember the first fixed blade knife I carried when I started hunting dear. It was a little Buck. It didn't have much of a blade and didn't hold an edge as well as the knife I...

Show off and talk about your Flat/convex grinds here!

I only do flat grinds. I don't have a wheel on my grinder yet. I may get one in the future. Flat grinds seem to work just fine.

High heat engine paint for knives?

I've used it on a couple guns. It produces a good finish which is fairly tough but I don't think it would last very long on a knife that gets used.

    blade trashing

I have reprofiled a couple blades after getting them too thin. No matter how good the knife turns out, I feel that it is second rate because it did not come out according to plan. Being able to fix a mistake is great. Not making the mistake in the first place is what I'm shooting for. To...

    My best to date

    blade trashing

It is a comfort to see that other knifemakers have the same issues I have. I only have contact with one other knifemaker and I don't get to talk to him as much as I would like. The makers who chimed in on this post let me know that I'm not alone in my fight with the grinder.

    blade trashing

Thanks guys. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has a bad grinding day. It's not all bad I e-mailed a customer about the delay and they added 1/2" to the blade design. I may be running behind now but the customer will get the knife they want and that is always a good thing. My...

    blade trashing

I went back to the grinder. Third time was the charm. I have a very nice grind almost finished. I kept telling myself "you don't know what you're doing", "you suck at knife making", "you're going to trash some perfectly good steel", "you need to stick to archery for a hobby" as I was...

    blade trashing

Thanks. I know there are a few people who feel my pain. I'm tired of learning. I just want to be able to walk up to a grinder and make perfect grinds everytime. Maybe then my customers would start getting their knives on time and my blood pressure would stay normal.

    blade trashing

I came inside, cooled down a little, and decided to try again on another profiled blade. I trashed it. Two blades in one day. That's a new record for me. I'm going to take up knitting. Anybody need a scarf or sweater?

    blade trashing

At what point should a knifemaker stop trashing blades when grinding them. I just came in from the garage after trashing a blade on the grinder. It's a little off. I can fix that. Oh crap! I'm kinda new to knife making and I don't trash as many blades as I once did but at some point this...
