    What belts handle ironwood well?

I'm trying ironwood for the first time, departing from my favorite mesquite <sniff sniff> for a while. Ugh. I put on a new 120 grit Norton AO belt and went to town. Seconds later I have smoke! Instant scorching! So I slow down to medium speed on my grinder and start moving fast to keep heat...

What colors or grits Rouge should I use?

If you are careful you can do a respectable job hand sanding a flat ground (very hard for hollow grinds) finished knife. The main problem is the area near the handle/guard. It is very very difficult to work this area and leave a clean finish. You are looking at a fairly time consuming job to...

    Couple of fillet knives

They look great. How heavy does it make the handles? I have considered Micarta for my fillet blades but worried it would be too heavy since I really like lightweight fillet knives.

    Gluing Micarta

Epoxy holds micarta to a knife tang very well, so it ought to hold 2 layers of micarta very well. I like using a couple of rubber bands to keep steady but not excess pressure during cure.

need help, whats wrong with my grinder?

+1 on the reset button, but if it trips repeatedly check for deeper problems. If you spin it after turning it on, does it take off? That could signal a bad starting capacitor. Any buzzing/humming noises when it is turned on? Any sign of a break in the power cord?

DW734, 3 blade single speed portable thickness planer. http://www.dewalt.com/tools/machinery-portable-thickness-planers-dw734.aspx As much as I'd love a bigger unit to do tabletop sized work, this does everything I need knife and general hobby woodwork related...including turning slabs of wood...

What is your (favorite) sharpening method?

IMO any discussion on sharpening needs to include the knife's intended use. Choppers git differnet edges than slicers and such. I mostly make slicers...hunting, fishing, and kitchen blades. For final sharpening I use a worn out 320 grit J-Flex (edge down, slowest pulley, light pressure, stoke...

    Motor Question

The motor you linked is listed at 1.5 horsepower. That will pull right at 20 amps at 115 VAC (happy medium, most people's house voltage runs between 110 and 120VAC). That means it will max out a single 20 amp circuit. Now we're talking dedicated circuits and such, or anything else you have...

    Howdy!

Howdy all! I lurk here occasionally but till now Bladeforums is my only posting place on knife type forums. I am a hobby maker, on and off for about 8 years now, but only total less than 50 blades or so. I'm an Electrical Engineering group leader by trade, and EE by education. Feel free to...
