Wood in the Kitchen - a test

Eric - I'll fire you off an email - and even though one of the Permalyn blocks has warped up slightly at the edge, the "look" of the Permalyn blocks is still very nice. I'm definitely going to try it again in the next round. The real looser in this round (for me) is the penetrating epoxy... it...

Oversize Wolverine with Some of the BOSS' Black Ash Burl Goodness!

Nice! At least /you/ will have a good number of knives on your table - I'd better get back down to the shop...

    Soldering- Lesson Learned

Silver solder is MUCH higher melting point than electronics or plumbing solder - up around 1350f. Takes torch work.

What is your (favorite) sharpening method?

I'm lucky to live near Goddard - he's switched over to using Simple Green for his honing lube - works great!

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

Since I missed out on Tung oil on the first round, I'll add it in to my post-OKCA-show test... Any Tung oil aficionados care to share /your/ procedure for applying Tung oil? Sounds like I should look for "polymerized" on the can? I'll probably re-try the Permalyn using a slightly different...

    Soldering- Lesson Learned

You guys are making me think /I/ should go to JB Weld for this type of thing too... I've been fighting soldering thinner brass ferrule with thicker brass guard using medium & easy silver solder. Not fun. As for flux, I've had more luck mixing up a slurry of borax and water than with the...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

I have a couple of carbon steel knives in my kitchen (of my own making & a san-mai chopper I'm fond of) so I'm well aware how fast they rust. Heck. I live in Western Oregon and if I don't run my dehumidifier in the Winter the non-stainless steel in my shop rusts! A little rust can be honed off...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

OK: I was wrong. But that's why I did this test. After two 1 hour soaks in hot soapy water followed by rinse and dry in the drying box (and the 2nd soak ended in a scrubbing with a fresh new Scotch Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge) - the Cherry block treated with Wipe-on Poly on Epoxy base warped...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

After rotating the blocks in my drying box for approx 24 hours I measured width & length of each block and put them into hot soapy water for 1 hour. Then rinsed them off and measured them again. I'm using cheap calipers and I figure my measuring is good to 0.01" which is pretty crude when you...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

A couple of nights ago I buffed up the wood blocks - took me until now to photograph 'em. Linseed Oil - the glow is back, though more muted than before the dish scrubbing... and more glow on the Oak than on the Cherry (maybe the Oak pores held some oil in reserve during the scrubbing?). Veg...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

Wow - for a flip-book before/after effect, go to my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/elementalforge and click on the "I've done 3 cycles..." photo. When the photo display page comes up click the left arrow for the "before" image - if you click back and forth between the Before & 3 Scrubs...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

I've done 3 cycles of dish-brush scrubbing with dish soap, rinsing in hot water, and air-drying in the dish rack. This has had major effects on all blocks. The good news so far is that none of the blocks appear dried-out - all seem like they are still protected from total drying. None show any...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

All the blocks are finished, buffed, and ready to test. Below are my impressions of the treatments, and the "before" image. Note that blocks treated with various oils and the salad bowl finish were soaked for a week, then sanded and buffed. The ones treated with penetrating epoxy were immersed...

    Question on blade finsihing

Here's Goddard's description of his mustard finish (it's the 2nd section on the page "Protective Coatings for Blades"): http://www.blademag.com/article/Knifemaking_Series_Part_Three_Page_Four/ It will not only camo the blade, but give some rust resistance... I've seen lots of blades done this...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

... just so you know the test is still in process: there was a delay waiting for the E-120HP glue applicator gun to get here (when I went to use the glue I realized that - oh by the way - you have to buy a $38 applicator gun, how special!). The testing blocks are all glued to 5160 - I've hand...

    Sharpening serrated edges.

The only thing that's worked for me is if I have a file &/or stone that is round or has a rounded edge - but slightly smaller radius than the serration ... so for a knife with big-small-small-big-small-small serrations it takes two file/stone - one big radius one small radius. PITA.

    best production kitchen knives

... someday ... just for fun ... I'd love to prepare a family feast with one of Bob Kramer's knives (European 8" Chef - Damascus - Redwood)... but I have a feeling it's like in the George Harrison song: it's gonna take time and a whole lotta spending money ... in the mean time Wusthof is pretty...

    Wood Finish

You want the super-thin stuff... from Boss Dog or your local hobby or home improvement shop... I've used latex gloves when messing with it so if something gets accidentally glued it's the glove and not my skin! I hear acetone will dissolve it too so I keep a can of that nearby. Multiple layers -...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

... now I've got a couple of woulda-coulda-shouldas: Tung oil and thinned polyurethane... the Linseed will have to stand in for Tung (not the same, I know) and the Linseed/Spar Urethane/Turpentine will have to stand in for thinned poly...
