Forge finish on a stock removal knife?

Beautiful knife, Fred! I had an idea about how to achieve an all-over black finish that would be pretty durable. I'm thinking about sandblasting the blade after heat treat, and then using an etching machine set to "mark" instead of etch, with no stencil. This should leave a nice opaque black...

New knife pictures, throughout the process.

Thanks for sharing this tip, it's a problem that's plagued me as well. And the knife looks like it's coming along nicely! Forgot to add, perhaps some compound rubbed on a kite string could polish inside those file grooves...

Another scandi knife, in 3/16" O1

I wanted to make another scandi since my jig was working so well for me. This time I used dymondwood again, and stacked black and white liners. Thanks for looking!

    My first warped blade

Well I did another blade, this time in 5/32 O1 and agitated up and down, no warping! :) The real test will be when I use the rest of that bar of 3/16" O1 and see what it does,

    My first warped blade

Thanks for your help and input. I appreciate it! I'll give the clamp and temper method a try the next time I end up with a warped blade. I'm guessing it's best to run at least one temper cycle first before clamping to relieve some of the internal stress?

Flat/Scandi Jig and Grizzly modification, lots of pictures.

No, since the tip of the blade is lower (while grinding edge up), the angle will place it farther from the belt, just as the spine is farther from the belt. To grind the belly to the tip, all you have to do is draw the handle of the blade away from the belt and allow the edge to pivot on the...

    My first warped blade

I think you might have solved it then! I agitated side to side in my quench. This was flat ground O1 steel bar stock so it wouldn't have had any hammer forging stresses. I had it in the rack that evenheat sells for use in their kilns, spine down. It actually rested on it's spine and did not...

    My first warped blade

Tried a 3/16" piece of O1 steel yesterday. I cut out the profile, and ground the bevel, then put it in the kiln cold. Ramped up to 1475 and held for 10 minutes, quenched in 130 degree mineral oil. After tempering twice at 425 degrees, I brought it back out to clean it up and notice a slight...

Forge finish on a stock removal knife?

I've used a mustard patina before on steel and it does make for an interesting effect. As for using the bleach, do you apply it before or after the heat treat cycle? As for the clean blades, I'm not really disappointed. :) I like that there is minimal clean-up to do. But I would like to...

Forge finish on a stock removal knife?

How can I get a deep, rich black, slightly stippled looking "forge finish" on a stock removal knife? I am using O1 steel, in an evenheat kiln, and have been quenching in "vet grade mineral oil". I do not foil wrap my blades, coat them, or inject inert gas into the kiln. But the darkening of the...

Almost finished with my third knife, pictures inside

Well this is my third knife, and hopefully the last knife that I do a full height convex grind on unless it's by choice! :steve: In any case, I still need to put a final edge on it and after I got in from my shop and cleaned it up a bit I noticed a few little spots here and there that need...

Thanks guys I appreciate the comments! I will definitely post some pics of that knife when it's finished. Just ran a heat treat cycle on it today.

This does interest me. I have been using one of those "angle finder" dials. I hold it against my platen and adjust the arm of the grinder until it reads 90* so I know the platen is vertical. With that set, I then use it to angle the table into the platen to 10* for a 20* inclusive grind. But...

    Profiling grinding inside curves

I recently ordered a sanding drum for my drill press, and have been using my dremel tool for the purpose. For finer grits than the dremel drums come with, I cut a slot in an aluminum rod and place sandpaper in the slot and wrap it around the rod and secure with tape. This goes in the drill...
