    Tools and steel

I guess that makes sense. I suppose I had just better use them for their intended purpose as files then toss them into the scrap bin once done. Unless of course they're Nicholson's... I doubt I'd be that lucky though. I wish I would have researched this before I started buying junk. Got about 2...

edge jigs. to make or to buy?

My dad's got an old 1" dremel belt sander that's older than I am (I'm 32) but it seems the belt flaps around quite a bit. I don't know if there's not proper tension on the belt or what. He said I could have it if I want it. I tried it once and it seemed super under powered, but maybe I can...

"My very first knife" - post up!

It's big brother is being made right now. Partially mortised full tang Osage Orange handle, looks a bit like a kukri. The more I work with these, the more I'm thinking this may be more of a medium carbon steel than high since some files seem to cut through it easier than others when doing work...

edge jigs. to make or to buy?

Likely part of my issue is simply just needing to learn, practice, read up, and do. I'm not using a slack belt sander like most, just a harbor freight 4x36" with added aluminum push plate behind to raise the belt off the table, and a shelf I welded together to make a sanding table. My buddy...

    Tools and steel

I noticed the other day that the harbor freight files are claimed as high carbon steel. I ALMOST took a picture just because I was looking at files. I don't think I'd be brave enough to make a knife out of a harbor freight file, even though I do love most of their stuff. (Commence cringing)...

edge jigs. to make or to buy?

I was looking for a jig to essentially grind my initial bevels. My concern was also about the one point of contact being on my grinding plate with the screw tilted angle iron also. I tend to do a lot of long flat grinds, and it's a bit nerve racking having my hand that close to my sander while...

edge jigs. to make or to buy?

I apologize for posting this, as I am almost certain it has probably been asked before. Unfortunately the term 'jig' is either too common or too short to search the forum for, and thus I'm forced to ask rather than simply search and learn. What do your edge cutting jigs look like? Have most of...

    Tools and steel

I understand completely. I guess this wouldn't be a good reference for most, just for some. As I mentioned, my wife is an antiques dealer, so finding 50+ year old files and other various tools on 150 year old farm houses is something I'm used to coming across. I've started collecting them and...

what kind of tang is this?

Thank you sir. I had considered making a framed tang for this as it would have been significantly easier, but I wasn't sure what I'd use as filler. Epoxy putty maybe? The only company I know if that makes it is Loctite though and it isn't very cheap. I suppose I cut cut a sliver of the wood I'm...

what kind of tang is this?

Is a knife still considered a full tang if you encompass the entire grip around the full tang but don't have the actual tang exposed? I've currently taken my two grip panels, and have carved an inlay where the entire tang will sit in one of the panels. This is to encompass a thumb rest made...

"My very first knife" - post up!

You're probably right. I've had a few people offer to buy it, but we'll see. If I do, there's so much that needs to change before it goes up for sale. It's not etched with anything, and I really need to even out the handles. You can't tell they're uneven unless you look at the spine of the...

"My very first knife" - post up!

Here's my first that I made completely unassisted that I can say I'm truly proud of. I've got two others that I made but one has a way offset pin, and the other my dad and a friend assisted on. (dad did the edge cause he's a machinist and angled milled perfect grind lines and my buddy heat...

building a forge; questions, scavaging, etc.

This is what I had in mind. I figured if I didn't have enough ceramic blanket, I could always use a little more Kast-o-lite. The stuff I got on ebay was more expensive than yours. I wish I had found your site first. I'd have ordered it there. I'll work with what I have though.

    flipping wet wheel

Whoa!! No kidding. Thanks for the warning. Knowing my luck, I'd be toast. It's a really small wheel, probably 6-8" diameter. Would be nice to add a pedal at least and just go slow. I just want both hands free when working. Either that or I guess I'll stick with my sander though not ideal.

    flipping wet wheel

I have an old hand crank wet wheel that I picked up at an estate sale that worked really well, but since I didn't have a jig, decided I needed both hands on the knife when working the edge. Long story short, the motor I have is a 1/2 horsepower 1750rpm (picked it up at a garage sale for a...

building a forge; questions, scavaging, etc.

I'll ask my scrap yard if they'll let me take a propane tank. They may not since they can't guarantee it's safety, even though I'm not going to be using it for conventional purposes. . I've been hitting the place up for materials that I can recycle into other things, and looking for old files...

    Tools and steel

I may be posting in the wrong forum, but maybe you guys know what I'm talking about. When I literally knew absolutely nothing about knife making (which I still have retained most of) I came across a picture chart of various hand tools and what kind of steel they were typically made from. The...

building a forge; questions, scavaging, etc.

Thank you. I'll probably be ordering some supplies soon from you Wayne. I suppose if I'm only going to use one layer of ceramic wool insulation, I won't need a huge diameter pipe then. The scrapyard has plenty of steel pipe in various diameters for me to pick from. My thoughts were to put a...

building a forge; questions, scavaging, etc.

Ed, I just looked, I have 8# density (whew!) It's CeraChem brand, found here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191604434061?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Do I need to do anything special where the seams hit each other? That'd be my main concern is that I'd create a hot spot...

building a forge; questions, scavaging, etc.

I'm looking into building my first forge, and am trying to collect my materials. So far, I've got 24"x16"x1" ceramic wool insulation from Ebay, rated at 2600 degrees. I can't remember which brand. I think they're all about the same. Ideally, I'd like my inner dimensions to be about 14" long...
