    Straightening a warped blade...

Thanks guys. I took a coffee break and don't feel like bashing myself in the head with a bar of steel. I re-heated it and have it all clamped in the vice again. One thought though, when I heat it do I need to get it to 1475 like I would for treating, or is 1200-1300 fine? I'm gonna let it sit...

    Straightening a warped blade...

Seriously, I'm about to wig right out. I have a piece of 3/8" 1095, ground out and then I heat treated it. It warped. A nice gentle curve from tip to skullcrusher. So I tried the trick posted here and clamped it to another piece of 3/8" steel, with a penny at the apex of the curve, it was...

    Heat treating question- Soak times

According to Uddeholm, the lower temp hardening directions the as quenched hardness is 58 which is what I have my blades heat treated to now. If I went with the higher temp directions the quench hardness is 61 or 62 if I'm remembering right. Oh yeah, this is for Elmax.

    Heat treating question- Soak times

Gotcha. So even though the blade comes out of the quench at the hardness I want it still needs to be tempered to the same thing so it can be all relaxed. Awesome. I think I'm about ready for launch.

    Heat treating question- Soak times

Thanks guys. Rob I gotta hit the ground running with this thing. Ive got test blades ready for trying out stuff, but also have 34 knives waiting to be heat treated right after. A mix of 1095, CPM154CM and Elmax. Here's another dumb question. Say the blade is heat treated and quenched and the...

    Heat treating question- Soak times

Thanks guys, and holy smokes, Ed Caffrey responded in one of my posts, anyway one other dumb question. How do you tell when a steel like Elmax or CPM154CM has come up to temp? They're gonna be almost 2000 degrees, I haven't found an infrared thermometer that goes that high. I would imagine that...

    Using Facebook

Absolutely. I am actually getting more sales from contacts from facebook than anywhere else right now. It is a great tool, if you keep up with it. I spend time daily talking with people on there, posting stuff that is coming up, posting what I have available, all kinds of stuff.

    Heat treating question- Soak times

So my Evenheat furnace looks to ship this Wednesday, so I've been wrapping my head around the whole heat treating thing. One question that has come up that I haven't been able to find an answer to involves soak times. Does the soak time start when the furnace reaches temp, or when the blade...

Dymmondwood or however you spell it has purple. I made my sister an 8" chefs knife and she wanted purple grips so that's what I did up for her.

You guys that make knives full time..What did you do in a previous profession?

I was a professional photographer until I got fed up with the traveling and being away from my, now, 5 year old son for most of the year. My wife owns a design and advertising company which allowed me to get my company started. Now it is a way more than full time gig. I generally work 6 to 7...

    I Don't Have A Knife I've Made

That happens about 9 times out of 10. I would make a knife and then make the mistake of showing it to people and poof, sold. So I just started making ugly knives for myself.

    CPM 154 or Elmax?

I always have all of mine tempered to 58, regardless of steel. I want ease of field maintenance more than I want ultimate edge holding. Around 90% of my knives go to the military, so being able to sharpen it easily in the field is one if the main priorities. I would imagine that if you took...

    CPM 154 or Elmax?

Here's a review of the Elmax I did from the raffle: http://KnifeDogs.com/showthread.php?18351-Elmax-Test-from-the-Raffle I've put one of my knives made from CPM154CM through the same tests and both the Elmax and the CPM154CM were hardened to 58. The CPM154CM didn't perform near as well. Not...
