Necker Destruction Test. Need more ideas

Necker Destruction Test. Round Two I just heat treated a batch of neckers and didn't like the grind on one so I decided to test it to destruction. Blade steel is 3/32 O1 heat treated in my oven, quenched in peanut oil, and tempered three times at 400 Here is what the knife looks like all...

    Blotchy Etch in 1084

Thanks Doug. I got a pretty good deal on ebay for one that comes with one of the small thermocouple. My plan is to cut the thermocouple off and wire it into the existing high temp thermocouple on the oven. I know this will give me only one thermocouple instead of the ideal two but I don't...

    Blotchy Etch in 1084

Kevin, I am honored that you would take the time to help me resolve this issue and educate me on the subject. I'll try to address your thoughts: Actually, my goal in etching was not to create hamon type lines because I figured 1084 wasn't suited well enough for that. The etch has/had two...

    Blotchy Etch in 1084

Brad, that is a good point and has crossed my mind. The spine at its thickest point is 3/16 and the edge was around .010 as quenched. I know that's way too thin but I got grind happy with a new belt. Next time I'll leave it in until a 7 count and see if that makes a difference.

    Blotchy Etch in 1084

If you mean after I pullit out of the oven, I don't take any time at all. It goes straight from the oven to the oil. Forgot to say that the P50 is at room temp (about 75 degrees last night)

    Blotchy Etch in 1084

Blotchy Etch in 1084 (With Pics) Since an etch will show what's happening inside the blade, I think this is more of a heat treat issue than poor etch. My Observations: Very cloudy and splotchy etch on 1084. Possible bad heat treat? My Process: Last night I heat treated a fairly thin (too...

Best way to finish Buckeye Burl

Forget about the CA. If it is stabilized, sand to 600 then use pink buffing compound to give it a shine. Works every time.

    Thickness of a chef's knife

I made one for my wife from 3/16 steel and it is a miserable kitchen knife. It wedges in everything. She hates it, but refuses to get rid of it since it's the first knife I made her. I have since made her a 5" Santoku from 3/32 and she loves it.

    Look Ma, No Pins!

I shaped the front bolsters first, then the scales then the rear bolsters. When assembling I had to put the scales on first since there was no way to get them under the dovetails with the hidden pins.

    Look Ma, No Pins!

I decided to challenge myself to create a handle with no visible pins and this is what I came up with Of course, it has pins - 7 of them: Two in each bolster and three 1/8" pins hidden 1/8" deep in the Jade G11. With the mitered (dovetail) bolsters, this handle will stay put for...

I realized last night that I only clean out the shop when I'm looking for the other half of the bolster that was flung across the room by the buffer. I always end up finding them in the oddest places.

    another fancy pants kitchen knife

Great looking knife. Would you mind if I ask what a bar of CTS XHP costs? I can't find any price sheets on it. I assume you got it from the place in Dallas?

When you temper a blade in the kitchen oven, make sure the blade is NOT on the bottom rack close to the heating elements. Instead, use the middle rack and put a large baking sheet on the bottom rack to act as a heat buffer. Last night I went to temper some blades and had the oven preheated...

I use bamboo skewers to mix and apply my epoxy. They work much better for me than acid brushes because I don't have to worry about bristles coming off. Also, wipe off the excess epoxy about 30 minutes after the piece has been epoxied together. There is virtually no cleanup on the ricasso if...
