Some times the platen that comes with a belt sander, for example a Ryobi I have, is not completely flat. I added a thin(3/32") plate of stainless steeel to mine with JB Weld. It really helps. But I findI do most of the sanding by hand, with wet/dry on a 3/4" thick piece of plastic.

Check Evil Bay for Dewars. They're used alot for Artificial Insemenation with cattle. Some people have gotten some really good buys.

www.elliscustomknifeworks for the Ceramic Platen. Comes 2" wide, and you cut it just like glass. I use JB Weld to attach it to the platen. 2thumbs

I have this down in The Dungeon, too, and I tape a cheaper filter on the outside of the better filter to catch the larger particles. Then I just vacuum it out after use.
