Thanks for the input guys. I know that there is no one size fits all steels out there. I also understand that the heat treat plays a critical role in performance. Just wanted to see what others thought would come close.

    Steel suggestion

I have an order for a survival type knife. The customer want a high carbon steel. He wants to be able to baton with it so it needs to be tough. He wants it to be easy to sharpen with good edge retention. What steel would be good to use?

    Heat treat oven question

True. I am one who found this out. If you are ordering the element from Budget Casting use only one of the 240 volt. I used two and could not get the oven to temp. I removed one and stretched it to the maximum manufactures recommendation and the oven is working great. One coil one SSR.

I have been getting hard black crud on my platen. It happens with both steel and glass platen. It scrubs off with solvent. I know it is coming from the belts. Not all of the belts do it. Anyone know the cause of how to prevent it?

How to scribe a center line ???

Use a drill bit the same thickness as the blade. Clamp it to your bench and slide the cutting edge along the drill tip. Flip blade over and repeat. This will give you true center. Mark blade edge with a black sharpie before scribing. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
